Hi,

Any Central Front gamers out there? I've been away from gaming since '85 and would like to get back into it. Served in Germany during the mid 70's (2/377 FA-part of VII Corps) and have always been intrigued by "what if" the balloon did go up in Central Europe? How woild NATO do against the Warsaw Pact short of a nuclear exchange? Read a number of books on the subject -"Red Army" "Red Thrust" "First Clash" "Team Yankee" etc., so the Central Front series definitely has my attention. I know things have changed alot since '85 and the series is dated but would still like to play it. "MBT" also looks interesting. See that S&T recently put out a game called "Wurzberg" about a 1950's invasion of West Germany so the subject still has some life to it. Would like to hear from you. Thanks.

That S&T game was a remake of the old ModQuad SPI game of Wurzburg that was was originally set in the late '70s.  Joe just ported it back to the pentomic divisions of the '50s.

If you're looking for tactical mid-80s stuff, you could do a lot worse that Lock'n'Load's current World at War series that covers the '85 invasion of Germany by the Russians, but also had modules that cover the Brits fighting the Russians in northern Germany, the battles of the Poles and East Germans against the Belgians and Dutch, the Russians rolling into France, and a Russian invasion of Sweden, as well as expansion material covering South Africa and some other stuff.  The scale is platoon-level units, and it's a big, expansive series of games.

If you want to go up an echelon or two, you could also look at LNLP's Dawn's Early Light, which covers much the same 'war' but with battalion-level counters and a different set of rules.

Some other options include GDW's The Third World War and GDW's Assault series. Both are long out of print and very complex but are way better than SPIs V Corps.

Although a battalion level series like "Dawn's Early Light" might be competition, The THIRD WORLD WAR and the "Assault" series are actually at different scales, with the former strategic in nature and the latter platoon level actions (IIRC).  Even the WORLD AT WAR series is a platoon level engagement scale (although I thought 'Assault' did it better).

The CFS, when unified for all five titles, bringing the 90 titles (NORTH GERMAN PLAIN, DONAU FRONT) back to the 1981 chonology of the first three, produces a great simulation and game experience.  Perhaps not perfect, but really fine.  There exists on the Consimworld site for the series a combined OB and one can obtain a wonderful set of counters to update all five titles.

HI LARRY,

MBT by GMT is worth the investment in time and $. When you where in Germany

did you hear the song 99 Luft Ballons :)
