Learning OCS can be a bit daunting to new players.  We’ve probably all met other gamers who say that they have just never got into the system.  We all want to help them, and there are some wonderful play aids and introductory tutorials out there.  What seems missing is a guide to OCS that pulls together advice on various play sub-systems with introductions to individual games in the series.

I agreed to bring together authors and produce an OCS Guide.  This would be something for players on a number of rungs of the learning ladder.  The Guide would go from the basics of movement up through articles on running operations, advice for defending, air war strategy, and so on.  There would be game-specific articles that would update the original designer play notes and give advice on how to take older games and play them today.  There would also be various player aids sprinkled in.

There are a few good people who have provided me some copy, but I need more helpers on this endeavour.  The plan is to put a document up on the MMP website for pre-order later this year.

You do not need to be an expert or old-timer—in some sense, it would be better to get some more recent players who still have considerable empathy for what it was like starting out in OCS.  You also do not have to be a great writer.  I can help, and there are co-editors who can also step in with advice.  What I need are some people with the dedication and sense of duty who can put some thought and typing in.  I can send more details to those interested.  Please email if you are at all interested in popping off your ‘reserve’ marker and joining in the exploitation phase.  Comments and ideas are also very welcome.

I'm looking forward to this! Maybe I can do something?

Hello Jim and Bill

It would be great to have your help.  Right now, the large gaps are on the "OCS for dummies" articles, rather than the game-specific articles.  Does one of these appeal?

Basics—movement, combat, supply: (like the OCS by Numbers or J Kucher’s Tunisia Example)

Units—what are the various unit types and formations and what are they good for

Attacking in OCS—when are you ready to launch an offensive?  How to attack with few, high-morale units?  How to attack with many, low-morale units?

Defending in OCS—how to defend? When to counterattack?

Artillery and Air Barrage

Supply Use Efficiency

Airborne invasions, amphibious landings, and naval rules

I'll send on further background and advice to writers if you seem something here you can get your teeth into.  Let me know.

Regards

Mark Milke

could we take snippets from the video that Bill and Jim did to write up specifics in detail?

I'll have to take a close look at that and see how it might be adapted to suit.  I'd prefer to get items aligned with the new Reluctant Enemies game so the Guide could be released with that.  It would still be great to have some handy volunteers who would transfer video to text for us all.  Email me directly if interested.
