John,
I heard recently that when SP was originally designed, the scale was supposed to be 25m to a hex; and then after 75% of the artwork was completed, they changed it to 50m a hex.
I was intrigued by this, do you recall why they changed the scale?
BTW, I think it's very cool that you were able to work on the original SP. It's a true classic.
cheers,
Simon
Hello Simon - it's always good to hear from someone that enjoyed the game. After 16 years I can't recall specifically why the scale was changed - I do remember there were LOTS of changes made to the graphics and the interface in the early summer of 1995. I recall there were issues with playtesters 'successfully breaking' the game e.g. someone found they could 'load' a tank onto another tank :-) Given what a precision designer Gary Grigsby was, I suspect there were scale issues at 25m to a hex with single armor units in that space along with an infantry squad or second vehicle and that prompted the move to 50m per hex.
I had a great deal of fun doing the research, designing the scenarios, and programming the computer unit's AI or more accurately their path-finding. I also decided to actually go in and name each unit in my scenarios rather than the generic ID they were given by the software.
Thanks for posting - got me thinking about those 'old days' :-)
Take care,
John
