Quite a while back Paper Wars did a feature with people speculating which five wargames they would save if their homes caught fire. I was wondering if anyone had changed their mind, or even given a bit of thought about their five most cherished games.
For this exercise, the games should be either (a) out of print or difficult to replace, or (b) just one you'd never want to be without. These are just wargames, and do not include abstract games like chess, Euros, or sports games, or RPGs like D&D.
It's only fair that I establish my 5..... They reflect my preference for tactical games and my interest in ancients and WWII.
In no particular order.....
1. OGRE/GEV: One of Steve Jackson's best and fun, fun, fun.... Small (a VHS tape box carries the game and all it's expansions) and easy to take on the road, which I do as often as I can.
2. AH's Squad Leader: The game that lured me away (for a time) from miniature wargaming. There's just something about that purple box (yes, I have that edition), those counters and the possibility of a "campaign." I once played a game on the morning of a friend's wedding to clam him down before the ceremony. What are best men for, away?
3. SPI's 30 Years War Quad: My favorite for the quads.... good "set" battles that, I suppose, appeal to the miniature wargamer in me. This was the game (the DG version) that brought me back to board wargaming.
4. Cry Havoc/Siege/Outremer (yes, I have them stuffed into one box): Standard Game's best... and one of the most beautiful games (if not The most beautiful game) ever produced. Scenario books 1 and 2 and a vast amount of material, which seems limited only to one's imagination. I love games with open-ended options and the opportunity to produce new scenarios.
5. AH Waterloo.... The first wargame I ever owned. How could I leave it in the flames?
There they are, folks. Now how about yours?

This one's easy...
1.My battered old coffee stained copy of 'White Death' (GDW)
2.All 4 games in the 'Third World War' series (also GDW)
..all favourites of mine and all not easy to get now..
I'd grab my book, The Games of War. It has 39 different sets of rules for minis battles. Then I'd grab the usb drive that has all the cardstock minis and extra files so I could rebuild my armies, navies, and air forces when I got a new printer. :)
Panzer Leader (of course)
Napoleon's Last Battles
The Russian Campaign
Napoleon's Triumph
Jutland
TRC was on my short list; perhaps I should reconsider dropping Waterloo and snagging TRC!

A big big issue is how likely am I to replace the game.
I don't have a damned thing that I couldn't get back, but I guess
I'd grab La Grande Guerre, Europa Universalis (IF it's a wargame - it's in a shady zone for me),
DAK (really want to play it for the first time), Cataphract (same issue), and Axis Empires (pretty
much the same - though having been through the rules, I thought about letting it burn).
World in Flames would HAVE to stay.
I won't cheat. One game, not the whole system :P
1) Combat Commander: Europe
2) Combat Commander: Mediterranea
3) ASLSK #3
4) Empire in Arms
5) WiF
Peter, do you know how many games I can hide in two boxes on CC :P
See you March 3rd?
Ugh! This is such a difficult question. You see, I am a series "man" so which game would I pick from a series or do I just take the whole thing to make up my five? Tough decisions.... There there is the whole rarity factor ...
1) Napoleon's Triumph - C'mon ......... c'mon .....!!
2) Carthage - Also due to having its boxless sibling "The Rise of the Roman Republic" jammed into it. Never played either, but those maps need protecting for future generations.
3) Up Front.
4) 3 Days of Gettysburg - I need something grand tactical and this is a big one.
5) Shifting Sands - I need something card driven and I enjoy this title.
I was thinking of just grabbing the entire M&P series, thus making this easier on me....
