Attached are both a PowerPoint and PDF version of this presentation, given at the Marine Corps Training and Education Command (TECOM) "Rejuvenating Maneuver Warfare" Workshop 2017-02. This is slightly modified from the original version given to the Defense First Friday Lunch in Washington D.C. and posted on StrategyPage.com. Check out the speaker notes (for the PDF these are contained in the Comments tab).
Two things struck the audience at the workshop. The first was that, regarding the educational aspects of wargaming, that one should not take game experience into combat. While real-world tactics usually work in games, tactics developed in games don't often carry over into the real-world. That's because games are an imperfect and simplified model of reality. More importantly, physical fear and danger is missing from the competition. But there is still a lot in wargaming that will educate the mind--particularly regarding decisionmaking in any kind of environment.
The second thing was how diverse and large the hobby wargame community was. A number of workshop participants expressed surprise at the Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit #1 demo that these kinds of commercial wargames even existed.
