I decided to join and start this discussion, because I am an ASL newbie (or, I guess the kidz are saying 'n00b' now ... oy.) After having the #1 starter kit on my shelf for about a year, Just played my first ASLSK scenario a couple of weeks ago, and enjoyed it very much.

I was blessed to score a 2nd ed ASL rulebook at the Games Plus auction last friday (in Chicago) for a mere $21, so I guess I'm on my way to bigger things ;-)

Planning to play again tomorrow evening. AAR later.

You'll like ASLSK so much that it will be difficult to "graduate" to the full rulebook. Enjoy all three modules. You'll have a good feel for the full 2nd Edition system after that, although all the additional detail will still take some time to get a handle on. But it won't be all that tough because you'll have the basic down.

Feel free to share your favorite scenarios....let us know how you are doing!

My first play was Retaking Vierville, in which I got my Germans shot to pieces. I had fun losing, though :-)

Rolled some of my worst dice ever, too.

Tonight: ASLSK #1 Scenario S2

I was the Soviets. We played to the end of turn 2. Game is put up and will be continued.

Uses half of Map Z, which has lots of buildings. Sviets set up on the south side of the board, Germans on the north. Soviets hold several buildings, which are objectives for the Germans.

I rolled my traditional cruddy dice. Have had a couple of squads killed, and another couple take casualties.

Germans cleared one of the three buildings thay have to take, and occupy half of another. My men are in sad shape.

Soviet reinforcements have not come on board yet, so I can still win this up to the last minute.

I will now try to post some pictures of this. My opponent is Chris Hartman. That's him in the picture. I used my phone's camera, so they don't look very good.

$21 only? You are the lucky guy!

Yep, 'blessed' I would say. :-)

Retail is $80? I suspect the majority of the auction attendeeds already had a copy. I haven't layed hands on it yet - maybe it's missing a chapter, or some fool thing like that.

Got my $21 ASL 2nd ed last week. It was complete, and in great shape - that is, until I dropped it the same day I picked it up from Tony's house. I was trying to set it on the shelf in the closet in my hotel room, missed the shelf and pitched it between the shelf and the clothes bar ... 6 1/2 feet to the floor below. Binder tore on one corner, but worse, one of the ring pairs separated enough to slip pages if turned carelessly. Waaah.

Played out War of the Rats from ASLSK #1 tonight. I took a good beating as the Soviet - if you define a "good beating" as having every single one of my units killed by the middle of turn 4.

The fun parts for me were taking out that fool flamethrower, and picking off a lone leader that tried to sprint from building to building.

I noticed that my friend's 1st ed has letter dividers built into the foldout charts, but the 2nd ed charts are just straight-edged. Isn't the second ed supposed to have separate dividers between the chapters in the rulebook? A - K? Mine doesn't have any, so I bought a set of colored tab dividers at Office Max.

If you order a new binder from MMP ($18), I wonder if it comes with dividers?

I wonder why I care so much?

Loved War of the Rats. Remember the -1 when firing at the flame thrower! That was always a fun guy to "smoke." This is a good scenario to learn where to place weak (7-0, 8-0) leaders. Don't stack them with the squads. You don't need the extra movement points because you are defending. Leave the leaders behind the line. Just give your MMCs a route lane back to the leaders and hopefully you can rally one or two before the Germans surround you. Another thing is always remember the victory conditions. I have seen the Germans blow right through the small builing on the southeast to push toward the other two buildings. Then the Russians get their tactical reserve and they set up off board right next to that building!

Don't bother with the full rule book. Put it on the shelf. The Starter Kits are awesome. Stick with them for a few months. Next time you make it to Chicago we should play. We have a fun group of novice players.

I recently played War of the Rats and I was able to take the side buildings but ran short of units to take the center building. His 527's reinforced the center building and it was all she wrote. it's a good scenario and very tough for the Germans to win. Hope to play it more in the future.

Unless I'm playing the Sov. ;-)

Not this Friday, as the wife and I have to pick up grandchildren from daycare at 5PM and hang with them until 8PM. That little chore is variable once weekly.

Well then I shall continue to "ping" away. The use of multi-decks (Operational, Limited War and Total war) should provide some interesting variations with the historical record.

Hang in their Robert. These card-driven games are fun. The mechanisms for movement and battle are fairly easy. Like you stated, and to paraphrase Shakespeare, "the strategy is the thing". Only play of the games can comfort one that their approach is…
