Heavy into Ney vs Wellington at the moment. Any one played this one much?

As an ASL newbie, I approve of that decision!  ;)

I'm simply happy to get a chance to play StarSoldier again. I expect Rob will embarass me badly, but just playing will be fun.

It has been interesting to see the scenarios in this one - Redmond et. al. created something more than the standard SPI scenarios by making them scalable, in today's verbage.

I _think_ the game aid is helpful - it has certainly allowed me to solitaire this game with no problem. I seriously need to change some things, but in reality, it works as is, with a little forebarence. As I said, I am looking at compiling it into a Windows app, but I really need to get the ASL training videos out!

Thanks for that Russ. Now I really want to hunt down a copy!

It's literally been since '79 that I had an enthusiastic opponent for StarSoldier; it's my kind of ASL and arguably my favorite SPI game. Russ had devoted serious talent and effort to get this game rolling- I only hope I prove a worthy foe!

I want to play the L'Chal Dah- their Home planet orbiting Sigma Draconis only has a 240-day year....love those change of seasons. And no 8-month Winters, either. My kind of world!

Peter - technically, it is a linked game in a shared universe. However, there is a link game than can be used to pull the games together. Still, think about it - a 'big' game in StarSoldier is 15 troops. A typical action in StarForce has at least ... hundreds of thousands of troops.

So the lin game gives the players a tractical series of scenarios based on the tactical points received from the original StarForce confrontation.....

And the play of the lined game allows for a strategic thinking to come to the fore, as well!

@ Linclon Graves - Great memories I see.

The Star soldiers games look novel. I missed them in S&T/SPI glory days. We were deep in  LotR and WWII!

Gideon...I keep looking at the S&T play off and trying to summon the courage to go thru the print, cut and play process....I promise to try soon!

Russ - does it directly integrate with StarForce, or is it a standalone game in the same universe?

Comment by Russ Gifford on June 28, 2012 at 7:35pm

I have played two or three sessions of StarSoldiers over the last few weeks. It had been more than 30 years since the last time I'd played it. (Wow! That'll blow your mind if you think about it!)

The experience has been good. The wide open spaces of StarSoldier had a much different feel from Sniper! and I was shocced how different the HIGH movement value made this game feel. Then add in the EXTREMELY open terrain and the game plays far differently than I remembered.

But it has been a lot of excitement.

I've been trying to develop sound tactical methods - I don;t know that i have found them. In my first game, no won scratched anyone else except by accident. In game two I proved you can KILL people in this game - but doing so can provoke your opponent to do the same!!!
