I consider Commands and Colors beer and Pretzels games. Don't get me wrong I own all of the CCA expansions and it is my favorite game system as well as CCN. They are easy to teach and grasp which is great to introduce to new players.
I see it's been about nine years since I last commented here. I thought I'd add a few titles to the list circa June 2019.
-- Compass Games's Designer's Signature Edition of THE AFRICAN CAMPAIGN. Sure, it's a new edition of a very old game. But the company happily kept the original rules, maintaining its status a true "beer 'n pretzels" war-game. A few variants but all of them simple and do not detract from this status at all.
-- Worthington Games's HOLDFAST: RUSSIA. I have the first edition which is just terrific. I'm told that the second edition, which expands the first to cover the whole war and not just OPERATION BARBAROSSA, doesn't add much and so the nature of the game covering the first part of the war is the same. Easy to learn but not easy to win.
-- C3i magazine's GETTYSBURG by Mark Herman. This has gotten so popular that GMT is going to more games in this series, at least from what we can tell from their P500 list. I'd call this title a retake on the old SPI "Blue & Gray" series folio games.
