Friends,

Would this be a good place to ask a question about AH's Bulge 81?  (I run a youth club and this game is perfect for their current skill level.)

Thanks,

Tim Smith

@Skip Franklin - Shenandoah's Battle of the Bulge is not only the best wargame on the iPad, it betters many of its pc brethren. They way the various battle factors are modeled is brilliant; entrenched units are difficult to rout, the timing and location of support units is spot-on, and the area - impulse system provides excellent bottlenecking. Very streamlined play too; supply is dictated by a trace-route back to your mapside, all modifiers are pre-figured, but you can see see a list of those that are active on a per-area basis, and ease-of-use was obviously design goal. The user experience design is second to none, the polish is amazing, and it was built by hex-and-counter veterans. At the risk of gushing, I would even say that this could be a watershed moment; this could be the future. It's like a much simplified version of Breakout: Normandy, A Victory Lost, or FAB: The Bulge. This game actually prompted my current obsession with Bulge games. I've been pulling out old gems and reading rules for more recent titles - Ardennes '44 is set up on my wargame table right now. If you're still on the fence and you have specific questions, feel free to hit me back, or if you do get it and want to try out the asynchronous play, I'm djflippy on GameCenter.

I see that Shenandoah Studio's Battle of the Bulge is out for the iPAD. I went through all the reviews. Most are glowing but a couple give me pause before buying. I would like to hear what you guys think here over on CSW Social.

Whimpering in the dark. Waiting for the Ardennes '44 reprint to make it to the house. I'm home recovering from surgery so have plenty of drool time.

Ok, just joined up here.  I have been lucky enough to travel with Mark to the Bulge twice; once in 2006 and another trip in 2010.  We are going again later this year in October. You can too; check out the Band of Gamers folder in the Consim Cafe folder.   It's really fun to take the maps and point out that the place we are now in is rough, or woods etc!  I have definately ordered the 2nd edition of his Ardennes game; you should too!

Peter, 2nd Ed is on P500 with an estimated shipping in April 2012.  Mark S has posted on games CSW forum the 2nd Ed rules, although I think he is still tweaking the rules, as I alluded to below regarding the attack limit.  In both A44 and N44 there are limits to the number of formations that can attack.  In N44 there is also an 18 factor attack limit.  In the original A44 there is not attack factor limit, but you are limited to 2 different formations.  In 2nd Ed he initially imposed a 15 facor attack limit in addition to the 2 formations.  Despite the limitations in the game Steve and I are playing the Germans managed a good initial breakout and the game has proceeded along historical lines.  On the CSW forum there was some discussion about the 15 factor limit making it too hard on the Germans and Mark reconsidered the rule, making it now optional. I think Steve and I agree that although it is limiting the Germans are still quite capable with it in place.

Steve and I finished turn 11 of Ardennes'44 on Vassal. I now have approx 6btns across the Ourthe.  Still is some potential to break through to the Muese but it is quickly passing by with each turn.  I had three 5-1 attacks last night which is rare with the 2nd ed attack limit of 15 that we started this game with. (Mark S has since changed the attack limit to an optional rule) Unfortunately I rolled 2  6's and a 5 on those attacks to gain pretty much nothing.  We rolled approx 30 times last night and resulted in 17 6's or 1's being rolled. Very extreme.  Don;t understand why the Vassal die roller is so wack.  Steve and I talked when we were done. Steve seems to think I'm doing well and can still win.  Based on the victory conditions I think it highly unlikely I will win despite haveing the overall game go fairly well for me.  Victory conditions for the German, as they should be, are pretty difficult to achieve.  I think I'll have to be happy with a draw in the end.  Still love this game.
