Hello Gents,
I just retired and now I finally have time to learn my EFS games. I really want to start with Typhoon because it's my favorite campaign, but I keep running across statements like "The original Typhoon rules don't allow the pocket at Vyazma to occur, nor do they include the very important Soviet HQ rules. You should really use the current EFS Barbarossa rules instead to make the game right."
Okay, so according to the GMT downloads page the "current EFS rulebook" is the Kiev To Rostov rules. I also found the "Retrofitting Typhoon to Barbarossa" article and posted all the changes in pencil to the KtR rulebook.
The retrofit article also directs me to ignore many of the Typhoon player aid charts in favor of the KtR charts, so now I'll be using a mix of charts from both games. And of course there is counter errata to the Typhoon counters that I can't do anything about except remember it when I encounter one of the affected counters.
I expect I'll spend the coming weeks learning and playing Typhoon in this fashion, and I'm wondering whether I'm going to encounter any unforeseen problems along the way. For example, I'll still need to use the original Typhoon Playbook for the scenarios. The retrofit article includes update information for the scenarios, but I have not been able to find any comments on how well they work.
I'd hate to put two weeks into Typhoon only to find "Oops, this isn't going to work" because of some fundamental retrofit compatibility problem I was unaware of.
So can you old hands give me some advice? Has anyone actually played "retrofitted Typhoon" and found the retrofit adequate to play the scenarios using the current EFS rules without problems?
Thanks, guys.
Ian
