ASL/HASL (Advanced Squad Leader/Historical Advanced Squad Leader) versus ATS (Advanced Tobruk System, a.k.a. Advanced Tactical System). Okay, ASL/HASL has such depth and richness, it's no doubt the ultimate in tactical board wargaming. But it's a huge investment of time, not to mention financial resources, to get into and to grow in. Having been one of the original playtesters for the old AH rulebook and BEYOND VALOR, I'm obviously biased towards this game. But ATS has a lot going for it. It's much easier to get into; any one game you buy has everything you need to play, and the games generally are historical actions (the prime attraction of HASL without all those modules/rules needed to get there). Best of all, ATS is REALLY interactive...far more than even ASL is. Hate to say this--and it will sound like heresy to some ASL fanatics, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd probably go with ATS and forgo ASL, seductive as that game is! Now, I know people have gripes with the Critical Hit company and some of its personalities, but I won't go into it. I'm speaking purely of the quality of product published in the ATS line as of right now. Certainly I don't expect everyone else to agree with me, so air your perspectives here. For someone interested in getting into a detailed and open-ended squad-level tactical wargame system, which one do you advocate getting into? ASL? ATS? Or, just to throw a ringer into the mix, GMT's COMBAT COMMANDER series?
