Exporting Overlays

Something that used to drive me nuts was that when creating a map if you create a new overlay in that map it hides where it is saved . So you cannot grab it to use on another map. Solution select the overlay click "Edit bit map" when you get it in…Continue

Nice program. Just bought it this morning and have a simple Arab-Israeli Wars map made.

Not sure exactly what you're trying to do... but to put a background in a map within HexDraw all you have to do is:

Put the file in the Hexdraw/Background directory. Open up your map and go select the tab on the far right (after Text) which is Background. Then click on the New button and open your Background folder to select the graphic file. It will then show up in your list. Make sure it is highlighted and click on your map. Your graphic file should appear as background (which can be scaled and rotated as needed). Hope that helps...

I just purchased this thing. I had a lot of trouble getting it to install correctly but Jo helped greatly. I think it is installed correctly  now, but I cannot get it to load a bitmap background from my desktop--or at least I can't see it, even with transparency set. Am I doing something stupid or not doing something obvious? Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

take care

Oh, you wanted transparency. Same here. I tackled it by exporting as a gif, then opened in GIMP, and chose the Select by Color Tool (top right of the Toolbox, showing red/blue/green pixels in a stack). Click on the colour in the hex, hit delete, and save as PNG. Voila, transparent hexgrid.

Came in handy when I needed to correct the "off by 1" hex numbering dilemma for ASL maps.

Well, that's not really the issue for me, because that still fills the hexes with a color rather than being transparent.  But I guess I found a work-around for it, though it was a pain in the butt.  I exported it black on purple as a PNG, then opened it up with GIMP (which I don't know how to use), then figured out how to make the purple the alpha channel transparency in GIMP and exported it as a PNG with alpha channel transparency.  So now, when I load it into my graphics program, it shows up as a black hexgrid and the white parts transparent, so that other colors can show up underneath.  That was a lot of pain to go through; I wish that Hexdraw would do this automatically.  But it looks like I got what I needed.  Thanks for your help!

AHA!!! Even simpler solution!!!

When you first create your map, choose a background colour of 254-255-255 and you'll get white. No need to fill the hexes with 'white' terrain!!

Easy, peasy, chicken squeezy.

Ah, you misunderstand what I'm saying. The hexdot comment was an aside - keep them turned off.

If you choose 254-255-255 as a Terrain colour, you get white output.

Oh, and I enjoy giving help for this program - when I know the answer! :)

I am not talking about hex dots (I don't want any).  I just want a black hexgrid on a white background.  Maybe I can e-mail you my file and you can tell me what I am doing wrong?  I don't want to put you to any effort, but I am going crazy! :)
