Tried 255-255-255 and got black.

Tried 254-255-255 and got 'white'.

I checked, and the hex dots are 255-255-255 and they show up as white in the output. Weird.

255-255-255 exports to black.  0-0-0 exports to black.  All I want is a simple black on white hexgrid.  :(

some other color exports "correctly," in that the proper color is exported.  But I don't want a black on purple or black on green or black on whatever hexgrid.  This is very frustrating.

Whatever you turn on/off on the View menu will appear/disappear in the output.

If you haven't created a terrain colour for the white, that may be the issue for the black output.

From the Terrain tab, click the New button, then click the Colour button (red/green/blue dots next to the File icon within the Tab) and you then assign your preferred colour. Maybe 255-255-255 will work fine as pure white, in this case. Then plaster your map with white.

When you create a new map, make sure to choose a background colour that is not meant to be part of your map. That way, you can see if you missed a hex with your desired colour.

Hi, Alan.  Thanks for your comments.  Are you saying that if I turn off center dots on the "view" menu, it will not export the center dots?

I haven't created any terrain colors at all.

Comment by Alan Findlay on March 8, 2014 at 8:31pm

Hi Mark,

You can turn off the centre dots by going to View on the menu bar and removing the check mark next to CenterDots.

As for the background, I've noticed that HexDraw handles pure white and pure black uniquely.

Pure black is transparent. As for white, if you've created a Terrain colour for white, try avoiding an RGB number of 255-255-255. Go a little off-white (reduce one of the numbers by 2 or 3) and see if that solves it for you.

Quirky, yes. But I've really enjoyed making things with this program.

Can someone help me?  I must be doing something wrong.  I created a plain black on white hexgrid with numbers and everything looks great on the screen, but when I try to export it, it somehow changes into a big black box with no grid and white center hexdots (when I did not even have hexdots).  What am I doing wrong?  Any help would be appreciated.

Another neat feature to have would be the ability to rotate map you are working on. So for instance you finish a map and realize for whatever reason you would rather have one of the sides be the top of the map you could do it.

Hi Michael,

I can't find Jo's original solution sent to me, but essentially you need to install the program in something other than the Program Files directory. That means changing the default path during the installation process. I created new directory, HexDraw, on the C-drive, and plopped the program there. Or you could create the directory in the Documents folder.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the program. It's great!

I am getting the same "Unhandled Exception..." error as Alan Findlay.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have done several maps lately using custom overlays for fortification hexsides. A real neat feature for Hex Draw would be if overlays could be rotated using the Number pad or arrow keys!
