My favorite team when growing up was the X-Men, then I got the chance to read all the classic episodes from the F4 (until the Byrne period, which I love btw) and they became one of my favorite teams too. It's such a shame the F4 movies were so bad, they really deserved better...

Yes, Iron Man is one of the original and earliest Marvel Heroes; he had his first appearance in 1963. Since then, he became quite popular as a member of the superhero group "Avengers" who are still in action today - they even outpaced the X-Men who are one of the other large brands within the Marvel universe. By the way, Marvel announced movies for the other Avengers as well, for example Thor and Captain America. They even announced an Avengers movie which will bring Iron Man, Cap. America, Hulk and Thor together.

I can't remember if Iron Man was one of the original Marvel Heroes? Does any one know?
