Graduation!

When I started teaching at APUS, I found out that I could take courses there for free.  So, naturally as I'm a wargamer, I signed up for the Master of Arts program in Military History, concentrating on World War II.  I finished my last course, an elective on command and leadership in the Revolutionary War, and took my comprehensive exam at the end of June.  I ended up passing "with distinction."

Now, I've passed all the audits and reviews, and I'm scheduled to receive my degree, effective August 15.  Unfortunately I won't receive the paper diploma though for up to another couple of months.

That is the culmination of six years of work, taking one class at a time, while working two jobs and doing a lot of freelance writing, game design and development, and publishing Line of Departure.  It will all be officially over in less than a month.

Do the wargames with miniatures. It catches the eye and the imagination. I did "labs" with minis when I taught history, VERY effective!

Awesome, I'll check those out in detail (playthepast.org doesn't seem to be working right now). I'm developing a unit at the moment to explore historical re-enactment and historical simulations (ie: board and computer games).

Nathan,

You'll find some useful resources on incorporating games into education at:

Hi Nathan,

Right now, I'm teaching a Roman history class online for La Roche College in Pittsburgh.  I'm giving an extra credit assignment for the end of the class, in which students can write an after action report on the Roman-themed wargame, board or computer, of their choice.

I took a graduate military history class at APUS last year, on World War II in Europe.  That class had several required assignments, not extra credit, calling for AAR's of Combat Mission scenarios.  I picked Combat Mission: Normandy.

Hi folks,

I've been teaching history at Australian universities for about 10 years. I'm only just now starting to work games into my teaching. Has anyone else attempted this?

The fact that Carolyn like KAtie, married men like us tells us they are good and special people.

My wife Carolyn teaches special ed. I wouldn't trade jobs with her for any amount of money. Very difficult work indeed.

Dave:

Kudo's to you. I worked one summer at a camp for the blind and emotionally disadvantaged. Hard work even then for a young resislent man!

It still sounds like fun, Dave. You're also a braver man than me for taking on the responsibility of the kids with the worst problems.
