I'm now turning my attention towards my next project. A game of adventure and exploration in Africa.

I agree with Mark. Being a film director is a good description. Nothing wrong in having detailed info, but designing a game/scenario is really a matter of telling a story and making the system/mechanics work within that frame.

20 minute turns

Thanks Mark.  I understand what you mean.  As some background, it's an American Civil War game, regimental scale, 120 yds / hex.

Yes, you might be over thinking it. Unless the scale is appropriate, placing every unit involved in a battle can make a monstrous mess. A scenario designer must be something like a film director. You must first decide the story that you want to tell. What is the most important aspect of the battle, what was critical, key, and how can you portray that in a scenario. Only use the units and map that allow you to convey the feel you want. Less is more. I hope that helps.

I have a question about designing scenarios for historical battles.  How do seasoned designers go about it?

For the game I'm working on, I'm searching through every available account of the battle, AAR, regimental history, etc. to determine the approximate location of each regiment / leader / battery throughout the day.  Then, translate that into their position on the appropriate hex & map for each potential game turn using the actual battle as the basis.  Finally, find interesting starting positions and situations and using the actual locations to set up the scenario.

Am I over-thinking this?  Or is that the best way to do it?

It will be my attempt to make a new and different version of the old classic AH game "Source of the Nile"

So what is Heart of Darkness about?
