Quiet here.


I went to Scotland this past August and picked up 2 bottles of the Drink of the Gods.  I got a bottle of Talisker 57 North from the distillery on Skye (beautiful place, Skye) and a bottle of single cask Caol Ila 16 yr.


The Talisker remains unopened; I just look at it every so often.  The Caol Ila I have tasted and it is fantastic.  Very light in color and taste with a nice smoky/peaty finish.  Saving it for special occasions.

ok most enjoyable-bushmill's-have not tried the black-of the single malt ive only had glenlivet which is very enjoyable "clean@simple" never had johhny walker blue but black is my "usual" in 2011 johhny walker is comming out with double black which i'm very interested in-hope it gets to the states. but when i do some painting or writing or watching sports i reach for the black. if i;m having a kitchen table conversation or reading a deep book bushmill's gives me the warm and fuzzies. i'm not a real single malt guy actually i want to lead the blended scotch second comming! lol i will take free samples @ promote like the dicken's if anybodies out there! lol ps not a big fan of dewer's so you would have to "compensate" for a good word lol anyway for better our worse just call me the "blended guy" !

re Lagavulin, I'll drink anything from Islay, even Coal Isla...I do have a bottle or two of Lagavulin lying around, but I haven't poured a dram in ages

re age, I'm an agnostic. Basically, the spirit doesn't change after about 8 years or so - it's not like fine wine. So any change in the taste character of an older malt comes straight from the wood - it's like an additive :)

I've read some writers claim that the air would impart a flavour - for example, the salt sea air of the island distilleries, and this would presumably vary with age. I am pretty unconvinced though.

So for me, aged whisky is a wonderful marketing wheeze, but not much more. I'm jealous I didn't think of it back in the day when I helped Morrison Bowmore rebrand their malt...

Love Highland Park 18, when it can be had. Tonight I enjoyed an Ardbeg 10 year, neat, with a fine Gurkha Vulcan cigar out on the porch....

David Hughes--if you like the three "B's" and Laphroig, I wonder what you think of Lagavulin 16?

I was impressed with the Macallan 18 but it is quite pricey. The 12 YO Sherry is an overlooked bargain as it has similar qualities as the 18 (though not as subtle).

(SALE ALERT!! Although Macallan seldom goes on sale, I picked up a bottle of the 18 Sherry yesterday and save $51!!) YMMV....

This last Thursday, a friend and I were invited to a scotch tasting event in Redwood City CA. It was put on by Remy-Cointreau who owns Macallan and Highland Park.

The other sponsor was Beltramo's liquors in Menlo Park (a great place with a WALL of scotch for your enjoyment).

Anyway, the tables were set with six glasses that included Macallan 10 YO Fine Oak, 12 YO Sherry, 17 YO Fine Oak and 18 YO Sherry.

The Highland Park included the 15 and the 18 (a favorite of mine). For 'desert' they broke out the 25 YO Macallan and a 30 YO Highland Park.

It was GREAT! To top it all off, rather than just hors d'oeuvres, we were served a full five course meal.

All at no charge......

Unbelievable..... but true!

I had a nice whisky progression the other night. Started with an Auchentoshan, which was sweet as honey. Moved on to an old favourite, Bowmore, which of course is a bit peatier and saltier. The Bowmore was a softer drink than I remembered. Next came an Ardbeg, which always gets my vote as the best balanced of the Islays - it's a crystal glass on Christmas morning by a roaring fire kind of a malt. Finished off by a Laphroig.

All very nice - three Islays and a Lowland - it's increasingly rare for me to drink a Speyside whisky - I wonder why?

Had a new (to me) malt last night - Glenrothes. I didn't even know there was a distillery there. :) It is badged as a Speyside, but if the distillery really is in Fife, then the Spey just got a lot longer...

The malt was 18 year old, and was noticable for its complete absence of peat. It's very red in colour, and the sweetest malt I've drink for a very long time. The makers claim berries, vanilla and butterscotch, but all I really got was sherry (presumably from the cask) and sugar. Quite pleasant though. As a contrast we had a Laphroig; much as I love three "Bs" from Islay (Bowmore, Bruichladdich and Bunnahabhain,) Laphroig really is the daddy...

The only--I repeat ONLY--pure/single malt I'll put ice in would be Glenfiddich in the summer. And I only drink Glenfiddich in the summer. Double. With one--ONLY ONE--ice cube in the glass.

I'm with Andreas on the "Bourbon On the Rock" Rock. Singular. For all the reasons he mentions.

In the hot summer days I actually enjoy 'Bourbon on the rock', i.e. a double bourbon with one small ice cube. This way the whiskey doesn't get that thinned and it is slightly cool, not cold. Otherwise the whiskey would be too warm to enjoy. So for me it's one icecube and double whiskey or no whiskey at all in summer, but the latter is no option for me ;-)
