A celebration of finishing 6th and obtaining the rarest of rare and holiest of holies; a WBC sand plaque.

Back in 2003, during the roll-off for a 6th place PoG wood, Jason Levine first introduced a few of us to the legend of the "the way of the sand". He pointed out that each year, only a few events at WBC are "6" rated (ex: Paths of Glory, Victory in the Pacific, etc) awarding these gems. Approximately 155 sand plaques have been awarded in the course of human history. He articulated "The Way of the Sand" for us and a few of us grasshoppers to follow.

The current Grand Sandman is Jim Eliason with 4 awards. All hail Jim! The Deputy Grand Sandman is Rich Atwater with 3 awards. Rounding out those with multiple sand plaques (2 in this case): Jennifer Thomas, Mark Pitcavage, Paul Van Bloem and Scott Pfeiffer. You can check the PDF file above to see if you are a member of this fraternity. And, as an added bonus, we remain Reiff-free in 2011.

In 2010, we held our first sandbash at WBC. We hope to make the Thursday nite of the WBC - late - in the bar (10 PM) - a sand plaquer tradition. We had 20 show up in fez's (thanks to sandman Tim Rogers), hawaiin shirts and djellaba - and even a few packing their sand plaques. A great time was had by all. We took some pictures (I'll post when available) and conducted the First Annual Sand Plaque parade - which was a hoot. Even got Mr.Greenwood to walk proudly in the parade sporting a fez. Highlights included the applause from many that believe 6th is good enough in these trying times. We also presented a fez at to the newest B-17er at their after-action-report event on Friday nite. We also dropped a few fez's to the BPA award team to hand out as they saw fit. In the future, we will try to have a new fez on hand for each new sand plaquer (or, they can pick them up at the following WBC). Finally, we had a hard laugh at the many schemes we heard in 2010 to try to secure such a coveted piece of wood.

The Sandbash at the 2011 WBC was another rousing success with Jimbo's yearly recounting of his humiliation of barely missing obtaining a sand plaque, a few words of wisdom from the Grand Sandman, the rolloff for the PoG 2011 sandman (won by Tom Gregorio  - his second), induction of new sand people and the annual parade thru the convention.

Anyways, see you fellow sand people in 2012 at WBC and wear your fez's proudly in the meantime.

Although we'll have the Council of Sand Elders, you will always have the final word, Grand Sandman Eliason.

Yes, glory awaits us in 2013.

The Sand meeting was a disappointment this year.  Only one other fez showed up at first.  Due to a mysterious speech impediment that came on 6 weeks ago I was unable to make an effective speech or inspire the few non-fez wearing Sand people present, and was unable to convince a substitute to take over as MC.  With so few people, a march was not made.  After the other fez left, one more showed up much later, but that was it.  Hopefully we will return to glory next year.

Once again I messed up my quarterfinal seeding in Victory in the Pacific and  took home the 5th place plaque, just missing both my 5th sand plaque, and the 4th place I need to complete the career cycle.

Additionally, these four will form a Council of Senior Sand Elders, that will provide sage advice to the Sand Plaquers as required by the tribe. We will have a formal induction ceremony at WBC 2013.

Two categories of PLAQUE CYCLISTS:

Event...as in one event....Earned wood (yes, must be wood) in one event: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th.

Members: Tom Gregorio (2010 - 12 years to accomplish), Keith Wixson (2012 - 11 years to accomplish)

Year....earned wood (yes, must be wood) in ONE year: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th.

Members: Arthur Fields (class of 2004) and Rob Kircher (2012)
And, all four are of course, proud followers of the way of the sand.

I actually hit the cycle even before 2010 -- that happened to be the year TRC hit prize level 6.  I believe I also have placed 7th and 8th but, of course, no plaques for that.  =)

PS:  Yes, 22 years of playing this game has given me plenty of at-bats.

YOU DA MON....Maybe even the first to achieve the PLAQUE CYCLE!

I'm sorry I missed the Fez event - a weird turn of events.  My dinner plans fell through and I was there at the bar.  Went back to the room, to get my Fez, and discovered a stream of water coming through my ceiling!  By the time maintenance showed and applied a stop gap measure, it was too late and I was exhausted (and very annoyed) from dealing with the breach.  Pictures will be forthcoming.

Also:  I looked back through my stack and I hit for the cycle in TRC (1st in 96, 2nd in '01, 3rd in '98, 4th in '06, 5th in '08, and the Glorious Sand in '10.)
