I have a question for GBoH players. Namely, Your reactions and thoughts about Activation Marker mechanic (like in Chariots of Fire) compared to Initiative ratings with Momentum and Trump Rolls (like in Alexander and SPQR). Which You like better? I`d be interested more in why`s, but I`d be grateful for any comment. I have my opinion and I`ll offer it within next 24h :)
Just coming back on Anthony's comment about the game rules being different within the GBoH series. As he says, this compares with other series games like Musket & Pike and Great Battles of the American Civil War, which each have one set of core rules.This makes it a bit easier to switch from one Musket & Pike game to another, for example.
While there are many similarities between GBoH game rules there are also sometimes clear differences and sometimes subtle differences, to reflect different periods of warfare. For GBoH players, this brings a bit of a learning curve each time and also a new experience as a player learns new tactics.
But consider this. The GBoH series spans in time from 2300 BC, with Chariots of Fire, to the middle ages, with Ran and Samurai. That's some 38 centuries, during which the tactics and weapons of warfare went through many evolutionary changes. The Musket & Pike series covers about 60 years in the 17th century and GBACW some 30 years in the 19th century. While there were some changes during these last two periods they were not so significant to warrant major rule differences within each series.
Without doubt,one generic set of rules makes it easy to play games within one series, but if you take this to the extreme of applying that to the GBoH series and the broad time span it covers, you'd have a bland, sterile experience, one where gaming chariot warfare would be no different to sending your Mongol army across the steppes (as in Devil's Horsemen). Such game rules do exist in the world of figure gaming on table-tops - I know as I've tried them. They are one reason why I play and enjoy the games in the GBoH series - each game is a fresh experience within its own tactical flavour.
I might have been misunderstood with my comments about Simple GBoH. I'm not suggesting that they are superior to the standard rules, only that for less time and effort commitment they still beat the majority of other ancient battle games out there. Some of us don't have the time or space to keep games set up at home.
GBOH is my favorite game system of all time. My friends and I tried Simple GBOH but did not like it. We always play the original rules. Yes, extra time spent, but well worth it. I have all the games. Looking forward to Hoplite. If out in time, will be playing it at Monstercon in May.
As for learning the rules of GBOH, I don't find them that difficult. They look pretty imposing at first but as you play the game, it plays out quite logically and becomes routine. I can see why some would like the Simple rules because they seem to shortcut some of the processes. The exchange of missile fire as units come into contact can be time-consuming. Still, I like the full GBOH.
I haven't played GBOH on vassal but would be willing to try that if someone wants to.

I too am looking for some face-to-face gaming, even if it means travelling to other parts of the UK - I live in Chelmsford, Essex. I have done PBEM so would be up for that too or live using skype, which is even better.
Hoplite is going to be a great game. I'll be building the Vassal module for Hoplite.
For those of you who have commented about 'getting into' the rules of GBoH, why not try the 'Simple Great Battles of History' Rules. Same games, same great look but much better if you aren't really interested in how the warriors exchanged sweat. I've just managed to get hold of a copy of Tyrant for the Alex. So I might be looking to do some Mac vs Syracus games in the near future. By the way, I'm a newby to this site. How do you talk to individual members? I notice that are a lot of UK members and I'd like to get in touch with those that are local to me for face to face gaming but I don't know how. Secondly, does anyone PBEM? I've noticed some names bandied about such as Vassal but I really don't know what they mean! Any help would be appreciated.
PS. Looking forward to Hoplite.
