Part II of the Squadron Mission:

Zone 7
Weather is 100% cloud cover and all bombers cleared malfunctions check.  Fighters attack the middle cell but misses on any hits on bomber#1 Bachelor’s den and moving to next zone.

Zone 6
Weather is clear and contrails can be seen and all bombers cleared malfunctions check. Fighters attack low cell and bomber #16 Feather Merchant takes 4 hits. Squadron moves to next zone.

Zone 5
Weather again is clear but no contrails can be seen and all but Bomber #11 Darling Lee which lost instrument control on flaps cleared malfunction check. No fighters were encountered in zone and moving to next zone.

Zone 4
Weather was clear again and contrails formed. All bombers cleared malfunction check and fighters attacked the middle cell but missed bomber #1 Bachelor’s Den. Squadron now moving to the next zone.

Zone 3
Weather was haze with no contrails to be seen. All bombers passed malfunction check and no fighters encountered. The squadron is moving onto the next zone.

Zone 2
Weather was 100% cloud cover with no contrails. All bombers passed malfunction checks with the exception of bomber #15 Dorothy which lost all four turbochargers and in essence lost all four engines. The pilot decided to land at an auxiliary field instead of bailing out. The pilot, Engineer, Ball Turret gunner, Left and right waist came away with light wounds while the bombardier, navigator, radio operator and tail gunner escaped unscathed but the co-pilot was seriously wounded and later invalided home. The squadron is now preparing to land.

Home Field
Weather was good and bombers started to land.  Remaining 14 bombers landed safely.   18 bombers took off with 2 aborts, 1 shot down, 1 landed at auxiliary field and 14 bombers returned.

With TFT you get optional rules to fly as part of a squadron. You fly your plane per normal rules, but the rest of the squadron is abstracted. The following Mission Report of a squadron mission is from Allen Iott. Zones to the target are in part 1.

Target for Today Squadron Synopsis

The group has been assembled and the target for today is Saint Nazaire and the U-boat pens.  We have good weather over the base and takeoff is around the corner. Middle Cell with Squadron Lead took off with one bomber (#5 Flak Shy Lady) with a possible malfunction which turned out to be a false alarm and then that cell was aloft and circling. Next came High Cell which took off with no incidents and finally the Low Cell with my ship, #13 Pistol Packin’ Mama as cell lead. All Low Cell launched successfully and airborne except for #14, Dol which had the #1 engine catch fire but they were able to put the fire out but they circled after all planes launched and then landed which scratched them from the mission.

Zone 2 (Gazeteer N/A)
Weather is 50% cloud cover and all 17 bombers got through the malfunction check.

Zone 3 (Gazeteer N/A)
Weather is 50% cold cover and Bomber #9 Cocko the Walk lost power to all heated suits and aborted and dropped to 10,000 feet and turned back to base. The other 16 bombers continue ahead.

Zone 4
Weather is clear and there are contrails with good fighter cover and all bombers passed malfunction check. My bomber is attacked by FW-190 at 9 low and ME109 at 12 level. The fighter cover drives off the 190 at 9 low and my nose and top turret miss the 109 but the fighter misses too and the tail misses on the passing shot.  ON the squadron level, the high cell is attacked and bomber #11 Darling Lee (Tail end Charlie for high cell) took 4 hits. Moving onto next zone.

Zone 5
Weather is Hazy with no contrails with good fighter cover. All bombers pass malfunction check.  No fighters encountered and moving to next zone.

Zone 6
Weather was 100% cloud cover and Recall check was negative and all bomber passed malfunction check. No fighters encountered and moving to next zone.

Zone 7
Weather again 100% cloud cover and recall check was negative. All bombers passed malfunction check except #5 Flak Shy Lady with instruments for the ailerons and #7 Eradicator which is the Middle Cell Leader with Bomb release mechanism not working and that will have to use manual release. No fighters encountered and moving to next zone.

Weather was 50% cloud cover and the target was mostly obscured. All 16 bombers pass the malfunction phase. The first wave of fighters roll 32 was 190 6 low and as cell leader 109 12 level. The 109 was shot down by the top turret (new ace) and nose and the 190 were downed by ball turret and tail guns. The next wave was 53 was a 109 at 9 level, 12 high and 12 level. Top turret took out the 109 at 12 high and the ball turret (new ace and left waist took out the 109 at 9 level. The remaining 109 at 12 level was missed by the nose gun and then missed the bomber.  As for the rest of the squadron, bomber 10 Chastain’s Kindergarten damaged a fighter. Flak was medium and hit my bomber, Pistol Packin’ Mama in the right wing causing a fire in engine #4 and despite best efforts, the fire spread and engulfed the wing and the pilot ordered everyone to bailout. 10 out of 10 parachutes deployed and everyone landed okay except out of the 10 crewman, only one was rescued by the French and sent back to England while the others were captured and became POWs. The squadron had one bomber #15 Dorothy take one hit from Flak but the squadron continued to the target and most were on target with an average of 29%. The squadron then turned for home.

Additional flak check for squadron yielded no further hits on squadron.  No fighters encountered and moving to next zone.

Been waiting for this one for a while.  And I am not the only one based on comments at the B-17 tournament at Celesticon.  I see no problem with it making its numbers for publication once its hits the CPO.  Have the rules been posted anywhere (have not seen them in my usual haunts)

The game should be going on presale sometime during the Labor Day weekend. The page is ready and will be launched when Randy at Legion Wargames has all the other games ready to go. He's got a huge selection coming out so keep an eye out!

Ron -- yes. Randy was giving it an open playtest at the CSW Expo.
