Cataphracts eventually although we spent 3 turns IIRC locked together causing equal hits and no Morale tests or casualties Their heavier armour prevailed in end as I was rolling to hit on 5s they on 4s.
Cross If Iron was a huge influence on me as youngster ( along with A Bridge Too Far) it was rated X but I managed to get in to cinema as a 13 yr old :-)
James Coburns finest hour IMHO (despite some dodgy Americanisms in dialogue)
I have Soundtrack LP the original novel (The Willing Flesh) and the film on several formats over the years.
And like you have fought out several scenes with Squad Leader and Miniatures
Damn see what you started ! :-)

I figured the troops on the left to be Byzantine, but I couldn't place the chaps on the right. Who won this skirmish? Love your avatar, by the way... prolly my favorite Sam Peckinpah film after The Wild Bunch. Steiner's reconnaissance platoon has fought many an action on my old Sniper! gameboard!

My eyesight isn't what it used to be, Gary. Who is fighting who? The horsemen look like cataphracts...  Also, whoever painted these miniatures -- OUTSTANDING!!
