About Me
Retired civil servant. I've been playing wargames, on-and-off, for about 40 years, mostly boardgames - my preference. Naturally there was less time to boardgame when I was working full-time and the children were young, but now...it's my priority hobby. Hence my gaming and my GBoH website - see the web address below.
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
History, especially ancient history, with an emphasis on the military dimension but also the political dimension. Other interests are running; walking/running with our American labrador; reading; films; and camping.

Why do we game?

First, before the howls of derision, let me say I did check to see if anyone had posted a similar blog here. I couldn't find one, so hence this blog. That doesn't mean to say there isn't one, just that perhaps I missed it...

Yesterday, I was waiting for a relative’s plane to arrive at an airport. As usual, her plane was delayed. So, looking to ‘kill some time’, I sauntered over to a nearby retailers, ignoring the drinks and chocolates, heading towards the book section. Half-heartedly,…

Siege of Syracuse

I recently read Donald Kagan's excellent history of the conflict between Athens and Sparta - 'The Peloponnesian War'. I was gripped by the critical events that became the tipping point in the long struggle: the siege of Syracuse. Today I came across a real gem that has somehow passed me by until now...

Yes, you guessed it. The game called 'Syracuse' by Vae Victis. Having seen a video summary of the game, I was then lucky enough to come across the rules in English and also a…

Hi Brendan:

I'm out in the sticks a bit - Great Leighs - but there could be several areas of mutual interest. My main interest is miniatures wargaming and I have a small internet business selling figures. However, I've played boardgames since the 1970s when I was on the editorial staff of The Wargamer magazine that became 3Ws (World Wide Wargamers). Currently I am involved in a project to set up an operation in the UK to market boardgames.

I am a member of Southend Wargames Club which meets at a member's house in Rayleigh on Thursdays and a boardgaming group which meets on Wednesdays at members' homes. One of the members runs Games Gazette, a games review magazine which is now online after many years of selling in hard copy format. Many of our games sessions are playing games to be reviewed in Gamers Gazette or play-testing potential new games - but we have a few favourites that get aired when the mood takes us.

My entry on CW derived from a decision to purchase Crown of Roses by GMT. I have played Frederick's War (is that the right name?) but I think that's the only other GMT game I've played. The Wars of the Roses has been of interest for many years, deriving from playing "Kingmaker", when it first appeared on the market way, way back and I'm painting a miniature army for table top games. My wife is very interested in Richard III as well.

OK - that's me (oh, I forgot to say that, although mentally I'm around 25, my knees and back are 75!). If, after learning all this, you'd like to make contact outside of CW, let me know.

Cheers,

Mike
