How to convert step-losses in one game to unit strength/fatigue/morale in a tactical game?

The situation:I'm interested in using a battalion-level operational wargame (J. Balkoski's St. Lo., West End Games, 1986) to manage a campaign and then play out the critical/interesting battles as…Continue

Broadsword replied to Patrick Carroll's discussion Which games do you play solo? in the group Lone Wolves
"Solo on the PC (Vassal, Cyberboard, Zun Tzu) is my only way to play, due to time limitations and lack of space to set up a FTF table game. I find many standard two-player wargames play just fine solitaire, especially if they have some…"

"How do the PG games play as solitaire? Has anyone developed some add-on rules specifically to make solo play work better? For example, I read one AAR where a solitaire player picked a 6-hex area for preplanned artillery and rolled a die each…"

Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy (Battlefront)

Since so many here are boardgame veterans, I thought I'd start a discussion about CM:BN.   FYI, I've developed a set of conversion rules for Joseph Balkoski's classic "St.-Lo" (West End Games) so it can be used as an operational layer to set up the tactical battles for CM;BN. Thes scales of these two games (battalions and companies) mesh almost perfectly.   About 2/3 of the St Lo boardgame map is already being mirrored in 3D terrain for CM;BN. The final 1/3 (E of the St Lo - Isigny highway)…See More

St. Lo

A gem of a Joseph Balkoski design from 1986.The designer himself e-mailed me the following, last weekend, in response to a fan letter:---My work on the St. Lo game was in 1984 -- 27 years ago -- and my memory of it is almost non-existent. Sadly, I don't think I even own a copy, although I do recall that I was very proud of that game in that I think it broke new ground in the hobby. Everything in the game was based on the realities of WWII combat that I had learned from interviewing the veterans…See More
