Winterfest XVI at Best Western Inn & Suites

February 8, 2013 to February 17, 2013
Winterfest WargamingA small mini-con of monster war gaming.  ~15-20 players attend annually.  We have a great facility, no distractions and great comradeship.  This year we have two games of Wach am Rhein by Decision going.  Also being played is the the GMT EFS Kiev To Rostov, OCS' GBII + Case Blue and some other small stuff.  Room for more good people here, see the website for details.See More

Profile Information

Your introduction to consim gaming:
I got started back in 1977 with Tactics II and then PanzerLeader which were gifts from my sister. Then I bought Terrible Swift Sword, Panzergruppe Guderian and NAW's Wagram. I also started the Wargames Society in high school.
Your favorite game(s):
Always RHBERG - starting in high school-....after "Terrible Swift Sword", we were acolytes; after "Campaign for North Africa" we were Apostles; After our Church ended with graduation, we all remained Believers: RHBERG's games ! ! I still am trying to get a copy of every game he got published.
What game(s) are you currently playing (solitaire, FTF, PBEM, etc.) or wish to play next?
Gettysburg.....command #17 and CounterAttack "Lee Moves North"
What game(s) have you played recently?
Reading A.A Nofi's "The Gettysburg Campaign" and having read a REALLY INTERESTING piece on "Why Lee Lost The Battle"....trying out the autthor's thesis - Lee lost because he deployed too soon. ? ....
In general, how much time do you spend gaming?
Never enough....less, much less due to animals .
How big is your game collection?
607 games or so...
Your local game club(s) and/or where you reside (let's network!)
Toledo, Ohio...well....I like CABS but cant seem to get to Columbus enough !
About Me
I am a Full Blood Oglala Lakota, born on Pine Ridge reservation (South Dakota). I served 13 years in the U.S. Army as a 98G3LRUY, medically retired due to Rhuematoid Arthritis and had both of my hips replaced and now working on having both knees replaced by the VA.!
Currently Divorcing. (What Fun- but actually making the best of it)
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
Wargames= Keeping my sanity, way beyond the call of duty...and keeping me YOUNG ! ! !. and due to friends, rediscovering the local music scene -mostly Jazz and acoustic. Going through my S&T collection - Such Excellent Memories ! ! ! Makes me glad to have discovered the hobby.
Battling cat from jumping on map.
Four Grandsons.

At Buckeye GameFest VIII, David Mignerey and I, as the Soviets, playing the upcoming OCS "Baltic Gap".

MidSummer's Night Reality

I now officially HATE Summer....if it's not 100 Degrees, then it's 'freak' summer STORMS (Y'know, where the electricity goes away ).

But, I also have something new and interesting: The VA and I are actively planning to replace my knees, one at a time. (My latest ortho appointment showed my latest hip replacement healing nicely -not as fast as last time and I have to go to Physical Therapy twice a week, still no problems)

Oh...and Yeah

I am currently recovering from the latest hip replacement (BOTH are now steel/polymer/porcelin contraptions). And I have to do the PT -on my own; HA! It's a good thing that I was an NCO, otherwise that would never happen- and just simply ....heal ? recover?... but even now, the VA and I are talking about which knee would I like

Wargames come into their own, at times like this.  As bad and as weird as it feels to have a major part of my body now…

Why I cant play a Wargame

.....Because Life The Universe, and EVERYTHING says so.....

I had "World at War #22 Minsk '44, Set up and Playing it (5th Gds Tanks Corps bounced off 5th Pz Div, but the Soviets went screaming through the south, aiming for Minsk - I had merely KG Anhalt down there- and the reinforcemtn rolls for the Germans were Horrible....

and I left the window open ...about two (2) inches....and a kitten came in. The Dog reacted...for some odd…

Easter Update: Now carrying a card for TSA Screeners.

SO, two weeks ago, March 22nd, I had Hip Replacement Surgery for my Left Hip (to go along with my Right Hip Replacement)..

And the Surgery went fine, done here at VA Medical center Ann Arbor Michigan, accomplished by the same surgeon that did my right hip several years ago !  I am still in The VA Med center, doing nicely according to surgeons, physicians, physical therapists and fellow patients. This VA is one of the best in the country, partnered with the…

The VA loves me

I supose I should inform you.

The New Date for my surgery is 22 March. I need to have some dental surgery done ( a tooth is about to lose a filling - maybe) and I am not allowed to have anything done for two years after the hip replacment.

                       Yup.

                        Sucks?

                       Yup.

but the end is in sight....finally.…

I still think TSS spawned the best with GBACW.  :-)

Chalons is the only DG folio I've tried. It's part of Battle of the Ancient World series, so was a known good. Even Paul's Shiloh was marred by some unsightly errata...

Hey Daniel,

I really hope your surgery goes well.

I noticed your profile pick while on the front page.  I then read you are of First Nations decent and a war-gamer.  I have created a game about the history of Western Canada and Northwestern USA tentatively called Whiskey Traders.  I would love to know if you might be interested in reviewing my project?

It would be great if you could potentially provide me with any feedback or comments perhaps on some of my event cards or the faction cards themselves.  I am currently trying to get feedback from Elders through the Education and Treaty departments of the Saskatchewan First Nations Council and also from the Metis community.

As an aside, my ex girlfried is First Nations Cree and we have a little boy together.

Sincerely,

Michael Becker

It's worse than forgetting about 9/11. We've returned to the isolationist idea that it was our fault - that if we just ignore what's going on in the rest of the world (except for a few benefit rock concerts and t-shirt sales), that we can go on with our lives like this forever. Which is also why, of course, that we elected a President who wants everybody to like us - rather than respect us (and not even our so-called "allies" respect us any more).

Thanks Dan. I'm planning to do just that once things settle down a little here. Still living a hotel room and trying to find a house to buy, Once I have a moment to contemplate something else, I'll start making the battlefield rounds.

Hi Daniel: I see you are out there in the sticks (just kidding). I remember, when I was kid, the airport was out in the sticks. Not anymore. OCS, eh? I've purchased many but have yet to play any.

Hello. I grew up in Toledo on the east Side. I went to Waite HS. I now live in Michigan NE of Detroit. I have a good friend in Northwood OH who plays games, esp ASL. Do you play ASL?

Daniel,

May 2-4, would be a good choice. There is also a CABS meeting on May 2. You could maybe come on Thursday night. I could set up EAT-G Scenario of Case Blue. You could play the Godless Reds against my Defenders of Western Civilization.
