Great War Card Game

I usually would not list this here, but I'm going to make an exception. One of our local game publishers, Dana Lombardy, has created a card game with Roger MacGowen on The Great War. It's absolutely gorgeous.  Take the time to check it out on Kickstarter: …See More

A bit of a mystery.... who can solve this one?

When I returned to board wargaming in 2000 I started buying up used games and magazines from our local game shop. Fortunately (or unfortunately), it was a time when people were bailing out of the area and selling off games “as cheap as chips.” A few dollars would buy an AH or SPI classic (punched) or a few magazines. You’d see they guys name and address (i.e. John Smith, 11 Elm St. Santa Cruz, etc..)  and I always wondered about the previous owners.  Here’s the mystery: I’m not quite sure how…See More

Time Enough at Last

Lately I’ve been thinking about the Twilight Zone episode “Time Enough at Last” where the character, Henry (played by Burgess Meredith), finally has the time to read all he wants as he is finally without interruptions (being the last man on Earth). Then he breaks his glasses…. Labor Day weekend has traditionally been my weekend to play wargames at our premier SF Bay Area wargame convention, Pacificon. Cancelled this year because of COVID, of course. I’ve been attending this convention in its…See More

Profile Information

Your introduction to consim gaming:
My first "serious" game was AH's D-Day (after playing the American Heritage series from MB and PB's 1863), a gift my brother received for his birthday, but didn't play..... I started in miniature wargaming (Wesencraft's Practical Wargaming) and strayed into RPGs for a short time, but always played SPI and AH titles. I love older miniatures and the games designed for them. Too bad there's not a "vintage wargaming" group.... perhaps I need to start one.
Your favorite game(s):
Askari, Cry Havoc (Standard Games), Simple Great Battles of History, The Command and Colors series, LnL:T. Any SPI QUAD, Games from the 70s.... and IGS series games from MMP
What game(s) are you currently playing (solitaire, FTF, PBEM, etc.) or wish to play next?
LnL: Day of Heroes
What game(s) have you played recently?
LnL:T: Heroes of Normandy and Day of Heroes
In general, how much time do you spend gaming?
About two hours per week, much more during the summer months
How big is your game collection?
~300+ games
Your local game club(s) and/or where you reside (let's network!)
Not involved in a club; considering starting one, though.... Anyone up on the Mendocino Coast should give me a shout!
About Me
I've taught history for 34 years, at every level including university. Lately I've developed an interest in games from the 70s and games from LnL. I'd like to see more interest in the history of the wargame hobby and some sort of organization devoted to the discussion of the topic. Perhaps a vintage or classic wargames society.
Live on the Mendocino Coast and in New Almaden, California.
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
I enjoy hiking, reading history and science fiction, music from the 70s, and I'm involved in park management issues/state parks preservation. I also have an interest in radio, having once built and managed an FM station.
Married 29 years to a very tolerant lady.

Was I the only one?

I was wondering what people set up to play this week with the 75th anniversary of D-Day so very much in the news.

After some consideration I passed over Conflict Games’ Overlord for LnL:T Heroes of Normandy, especially the “Flash,Thunder” scenario which gives a good solitaire game.

The Best Reason I Know to Give Away a New Wargame

As a high school teacher, one of the things I've never heard (in 31 years) is a 16 y.o. female student describe a wargame as (and I quote) "The most awesome game ever...."  She was talking about Napoleon (the AH version) that she played at game club "pizza and games" night. (see my last blog....)

How would one react?  Well, I just so happened to have a new copy of the CG version I'd picked up last summer at a store clearnace in Santa Clara (for $5!). So student "K" is now the proud…

It was -27 and generally 0 to 5 above the whole time with a major storm that left 2 1/2 feet going back into Idaho and 3 feet in Spokane - then when I got into the mountains and passes in central Washington, it was the same story!
