Making a Magnetic Game Board

The Magnetic Game Board Conundrum….If you’re like me, you’ve looked longingly at Marco’s magnetic game boards and wished you could somehow create one of your own. I’ve a busy work schedule and often don’t get much more time in than a few minutes here and there. A magnetic board would be ideal to keep the counters in position and store it away when the space was required for work.Unfortunately, those  lovely “counter Clips” now run  $129 for 50 half-inch clips. Yikes!  So how can one create the…See More

Since Panzerblitz and the original Squad Leader (Purple box!), I've looked for an eastern front game that is "just right". Is OST the answer?

Profile Information

Your introduction to consim gaming:
My first "serious" game was AH's D-Day (after playing the American Heritage series from MB and PB's 1863), a gift my brother received for his birthday, but didn't play..... I started in miniature wargaming (Wesencraft's Practical Wargaming) and strayed into RPGs for a short time, but always played SPI and AH titles. I love older miniatures and the games designed for them. Too bad there's not a "vintage wargaming" group.... perhaps I need to start one.
Your favorite game(s):
Askari, Cry Havoc (Standard Games), Simple Great Battles of History, The Command and Colors series, Squad Leader, Any SPI QUAD, Games from the 70s.... and IGS series games from MMP
What game(s) are you currently playing (solitaire, FTF, PBEM, etc.) or wish to play next?
SGBoH: Alexander the Great
What game(s) have you played recently?
Spearpoint 1943, Down in Flames, SGBoH Hoplite
In general, how much time do you spend gaming?
About four hours per week, much more during the summer months
How big is your game collection?
~300+ games
Your local game club(s) and/or where you reside (let's network!)
Not involved in a club; considering starting one, though.... Anyone up on the Mendocino Coast should give me a shout!
About Me
I've taught history for 30 years, at every level including university. Lately I've developed an interest in games from the 70s. I'd like to see more interest in the history of the wargame hobby and some sort of organization devoted to the discussion of the topic. Perhaps a vintage or classic wargames society.
Live on the Mendocino Coast and in New Almaden, California.
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
I enjoy hiking, reading history and science fiction, music from the 70s, and I'm involved in park management issues/state parks preservation. I also have an interest in radio, having once built and managed an FM station.
Married 24 years to a very tolerant lady.

Is it time to factor in the German use of Meth in wargames?

If you have not had the opportunity to read German historian Norman Ohler's  Blitzed, the least you can do is trek over to the (free) BBC History Magazine Extra Podcast website and give it a listen. It will change your view on the invasion of France.

Happy Thanksgiving

Best wishes for a happy Thanksgiving. While there are several things I'm not so thankful for this year, I am thankful for this community of gamers and John for making all of this happen.

A Tale of Two Magazines, Part 2

This late springtime brought another couple of wargame magazines: Battles # 10 and Paper Wars #82.  Both offered an interesting contrast, so I thought I’d just give my two cents on the matter.

First, Battles Magazine…..   What can be said about this chronically late, but always superb publication form Oliver Revenu.  Presentation is professional to the core; graphics invites the reader into each article. (I wasn’t intending to read the article on Pax…

It was -27 and generally 0 to 5 above the whole time with a major storm that left 2 1/2 feet going back into Idaho and 3 feet in Spokane - then when I got into the mountains and passes in central Washington, it was the same story!
