John, Yep, still here. My wife and I have lived in The Plains since 95. We've discussed moving to Maine from time to time, but we've no plans to relocate at the moment.

Profile Information

Your introduction to consim gaming:
The first semi-serious boardgames came when I was in my early teens - my good friend Jay has a family of gamers, and his mom made a habit of using the Admiral and well-placed secret armies to punish all of us at Castle Risk (which is, of course, vastly superior to regular risk).

I had brushes with Dungeons and Dragons and the usual role playing games in high school.

But it was the advent of PBEM aids and the Internet that turned me into a serious gamer. First I found games that I had seen on shelves as a kid - discovering Great Campaigns of the American Civil War, along with VASSAL and a few opponents willing to show me the ropes, led me to places like consimworld.com.

From there, I was on to more war games, euros, and card-driven games
Your favorite game(s):
Depends on the mood ...

New Year's Eve with the non-gaming family: Apples to Apples.

Euro: Puerto Rico

Hex-and-counter wargame: Great Campaigns of the American Civil War

Card-driven multi-player: Here I Stand. No questions asked.

Card-driven wargame: For the People.

Card-driven, but not a wargame: Twilight Struggle.

World War II grand strategic simulation (because EVERYONE should have a favorite of these!): World in Flames.

Soviet reinforcements mass in Fulda Gap; Berlin defenders destroyed

My kingdom for some plexi!

I need plexi. A lot of plexi.

A lot of plexi.

Now I've bought the usual piece of plexi from Lowes to cover a mapsheet or two.

But this is a 9 by 7 table. What would be great is two sheets - one 7 by 4, one 7 by 5.

Who's got a good idea ...?

How I spent my Sunday ...

War in Europe was under the Christmas tree this year .... but I've needed a table big enough to hold all nine maps!

Now - if only I could talk someone into driving to Fredericksburg once a week for the next two or three years ...

Soviet surprise attack catches NATO off guard

Oh the darkness cometh... :) Worry not, next draft of TVQ will be dainty and lighthearted. Best comparison: Candyland.

Did a goose hunting show many years ago near Laurel (if I remember correctly) Maryland. Guide's name was Bobby Ewing. Brought home a couple of geese to cook!

Justin - Awesome stiper! Looks like one anyway! Where were you fishing? I used to be a TV producer doing hunting and fishing shows for ESPN, ESPN2, Outdoor Life and FOX Sports Net. Shows I worked on were Suzuki Great Outdoors, Wal-Mart Great Outdoors, Yamaha's American Expeditions, Suzuki's On The Pole and Pull: A Tour of America's Shooting Clubs

Justin,

Nope. Just SJW and that a long time ago. Was a fav for about 18 months and then my opponent moved and I've had no one to play against since. Ed has tempted me to pick the game back up but with all my other duties HIS, Combat Commander, Shifting Sands, and now FAB I've yet to do so.

I've found the internal debate (i.e. the debate in my head) has been to either play a lot of games poorly or a few games well. I prefer the latter model, but then you must, as you say, find that set of holy grail games that one chooses to become goo…

Chris: Really - that's a good point. I wonder if the Audi folks realized the message they were sending out with this one. I doubt if anyone found it funny in the least. Smitty

Yes, this was a creepy ad. I looked at the Audi website to compare this car to others. Oddly enough, you are unable to compare it to the VW SportWagon TDI, which gets exactly the same mileage.
