Profile Information

Your introduction to consim gaming:
I played boardgames as a youngster and teenager (I remember a Civil War game with little plastic pieces that a friend of mine and I tried to puzzle out), but I wasn't really exposed until I met my husband in college. He was "Emperor" of his gaming club. Eventually, we ended up publishing some games (as Engelmann Military Simulations), and I went to a few gaming conventions (Atlanticon, Origins). I only gamed when he was around until he introduced me to my first AvalonCon. Since then, I've become more fanatical than he is--and regularly abandon him to game on my own. (I'm Assistant Convention Director at the World Boardgaming Championships.) I'm branching out into more wargames, but I'm pretty much open to any game.
Your favorite game(s):
Here I Stand, 7 Ages, Chariot Lords, Struggle of Empires, Sword of Rome, Twilight Struggle, Blue Max, Trireme, Gangsters, Circus Maximus, Crisis: Columbia, Rise and Fall, Shattered States, Puerto Rico, Robo Rally,
What game(s) are you currently playing (solitaire, FTF, PBEM, etc.) or wish to play next?
Here I Stand
What game(s) have you played recently?
Scramble for Africa (in play test), Here I Stand, King of Siam, MegaFauna

WBC 2009 - Precon Sunday (Aug. 2)

We pulled in on Saturday afternoon. It was great to see old friends already arriving. I sent all of the young'ins off to game after dinner and shopping, and I sat in the lobby and visited with the grown-ups (mostly CABS folks)--talking games and families and whatever else came to mind.

Today was Through the Ages. I played in both heats. The highlights: I like the latest edition. Well...losing to Joe Yaure and Michael Rogozinski (in the first game) and Tedd Mullaly (in the second game; I also en… Continue

Aug. 10 - Last day of WBC

Yeah...I know that I failed to get my blog posts up in a timely manner. During the pre-con, it seemed such an easy task, but once the gaming got going...suffice it to say that between not having my computer (because it was often being used in the seminar room) and finishing Here I Stand (or other games) after 2, I didn't do much at night other than fall in bed.

Sunday morning I couldn't drag myself out of bed early enough to attend the church service. I did make it down for the end of Rev. Huns… Continue

Aug. 9 - WBC Day 5

I spent most of the day helping Karsten run and playing in the Age of Empires III tournament. It was weird to have it down in Lampeter. I felt like it had been scheduled in the wrong location, but Don's impression was that it was the place with enough room. We did a lot of coaching, but a few experience players were present. Amelia played in one of my games, but she was hardly coherent, as she had stayed up almost all night watching the Patriot. Karsten coached his brother Eric and a couple of o… Continue

Aug. 3 - Second day of WBC Pre-Con

Well, Jacob managed to get up on time and play in his Semi-Final game again Jason Levine. He was thoroughly trounced, but Jason gave his some tips about how to improve his play, and Jacob actually listened! Perhaps he'll be a threat for the championship next year. Jason played Chris Trimmer and was throughly pummeled. I think Jacob needs to get some tips from Chris, too :)

Things have been pretty quiet. I went down to registration early and Don said he only needed me around noon. All went smoot… Continue

Aug. 2 - First day of WBC Pre-Con

I got up in time to help with setting up registration, though I'm glad that it didn't open until 9. I was worried that Jacob wouldn't wake up in time for his War of the Ring tournament at noon, so I left a wake-up call for him. Karsten says his strategies are quite good, and he thinks Jake may actually advance.

Registration is fairly brisk for the first morning, especially since not many people realized we'd be open. The Guermuths and Brosius families and Jason Levine are helping out greatly wi… Continue

Kaarin, here's a link to what might be the Civil War game that got you started, though I admit there's probably a bunch of them out there that had plastic pieces. Anyways, I had this game and your first-gaming experience brought back memories.

Loved the pictures from Market-Garden, Kaarin. Thanks for posting them. I've always wanted to visit the "Highway" and bridges, and your photos make me most eager to follow up on this. Check my page--I've got some photos from my WW1 tour that I took last year in France in commemoration of my father's service in La Grande Guerre.
