Apart from 'Risk,' my first taste game with a friend's copy of Richthofen's War, that I never got a chance to play. My real intro to the hobby was through a high school friend who showed me one of Avalon Hill's old catalogs. We each ordered three games (for me they were: Blitzkrieg, Jutland and 1776 ... the latter of which I still own.

Yeah, never mind the horses and the guns and sabres and stuff like that, it's those damned feathers that scared off the Turks and Swedes! ;-)
"Here come the dreaded Polish Hussars with thier ... FEATHERS! Run for your lives, or you'll be tickled to death!" (Well, did you think I wouldn't raz you a bit?) :-)
Good to see you on the site Mike! What's new in Nagel designs these days?
The "wings" were an effective psychological warfare enhancement. They made the Polish Hussars look a lot more fierce when massed in numbers and charging. They scared the hell out of the Turks and gave the Swedes a run for their money as well.
I wouldn't mind getting into the reenacting hobby, but as Andreas points out, its very expensive in both time and money.
Yeah, reenactment is a great hobby, similar to wargaming because both need time and dedication and can make life much more interesting. :-)
Here in Germany we have a lot of mediaeval festivals and Denny, my partner, and me often visited such events, enjoying the special atmosphere. We actually thought about joining the reenactment community, but had to face the fact that we can't since we already have a time- consuming hobby. But it's cool.
I am not. I visited a Polish festival (I'm about 1/4 and my wife pure-blood) in Pennsylvania a couple of years ago and there were some reenactors from the Sienkiewicz Society there. They let me try on the Hussar armor, complete with the feathered "wing." It was too cool! :-)
I have the game and no local FtF opponents, so the solitaire theme appeals. I led two light infantry US Army rifle platoons, and sometimes, acted as company commander. How is the game?
"When one plays a game solitaire there's usually more time that can be dedicated to the game"
Thanks Andreas, that is what I wanted to know.
When I play solitaire I don't mind "too much detail" but I have all the time and space I need to play.
I...
OK, Thanks Richard,
I was overseas when all that stuff went down. Most of the very little I know about it is from news reports of recent events.
Love your games!!
