I played my first board wargame, Avalon Hill's Midway, some time in the late '60's when I was in college. Fortunately for my college career, I decided the game was too complicated. In 1973, I stumbled on an interesting looking game in a toy store: Avalon Hill's 1914 (I liked the cover). Bought, tried to play it solitaire, thought it was too complicated. Fortunately, AH was kind enough to include a brochure with the game showing their other games. The ones rated "introductory" looked to be my speed. I went to Memco and bought Afrika Korps, Waterloo, and Stalingrad. Liked those. The AH game brochure also included an ad for their magazine, the General. I subscribed. I answered the opponents wanted ads. Somehow I found out about SPI, and subscribed to their magazines. I started to visit the nearby offices of AH. I went to the first Origins. I became immersed in wargaming for the next several years. Then I bought an Atari computer, and eventually an IBM clone, and got into computer gaming. Ironically, it was the computer that got me back into wargaming when I discovered that there were wargamer forums on GEnie. I've had regular ftf and pbm/pbem opponents for several years. I've accumulated thousands of games (including family and Euro games), and I still have probably 2000 to 2500. I am currently an officer in the Tomahawk Gaming Club, which meets almost every Friday night.
