He's dead, Jim. RIP Adam Cartwright

Pernell Roberts, the outspoken actor who played Adam Cartwright, the thoughtful eldest son on television’s seminal western series “Bonanza” and who was the last surviving member of the show’s original family, died Sunday at his home in Malibu, Calif. He was 81.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, said his lawyer and friend Richard A. Stone.

Dark-haired, handsome and athletically built, Mr. Roberts was a rising theater actor — a busy… Continue

Haiti

SO SOME PEOPLE ARE UNHAPPY THAT CRUISE SHIPS ARE STILL DOCKING AT HAITI, outside the earthquake zone. But Haiti is also suffering from economic devastation, and this is a significant source of desperately needed income and foreign exchange. Stopping these visits might help rich people in developed countries feel better about themselves, but it won’t do anything for Haiti, which still needs money. We saw something like this after the Indian Ocean tsunami, too. The locals made clear that they… Continue

MMP's WINTER OFFENSIVE 2010 Tourney-Fest, Bowie, MD

For those inclined towards ADVANCED SQUAD LEADER and other Multi-Man Publishing (MMP) titles, this is the wargaming event to be at. While starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday evening, it's hit full swing on Friday at the Comfort Inn right off the Route 301/Route 3 Exit of Route 50 in Bowie, MD.

MMP saves its fancy graphics for its games, not its tournaments!

Format is much like past WINTER OFFENSIVE events; there are a… Continue

Flashpoint: Central Front VII Corps Defense of Hof Gap version 2

Ok everyone, attached is an updated VII Corps scenario based on Ian Raine's research and some more re-reading of the older stuff. I also changed the victory conditions table because I thought the older one made it too easy for the WP to achieve a strategic victory. If you have any comments or changes, please let me know.

The End of FIRE AND MOVEMENT Magazine

Farewell to a faithful friend--in Issue 150 of FIRE AND MOVEMENT magazine, its editor, Jon Compton, announced he was leaving AND Chris Cummins dropped the news that this was the last issue of the publication (those with issues remaining would be issued a credit voucher). As some of you know, Jon moved from the West Coast to work with Mark Herman over at Booz-Allen Hamilton doing wargaming and so it's to… Continue

Flashpoint: Central Front, The VII Corps Defense of Hof Gap, Turn 4

Day 4 of the war saw the Czechs pushing westward in the face of strong resistance offered by the 4th Panzer Division, but the defense was not strong enough. In the south, the 20th Mech was not as successful, and basically did not make any progress. However, further north, the Czech 1st Tank, the 2nd Mech, and the 19th Mech was able to push west displacing remnants of the 2nd ACR and units of the 4th Panzer. 1st Tank was able to exploit its… Continue

Flashpoint: Central Front, The VII Corps Defense of Hof Gap, Turn 3

Turn 3 saw more concerted action by the WP forces to push NATO back to Nurnberg and beyond, from the north and the east. Starting in the south, the Germans held the Czech 20th Mechanized to only a few kilometers advance. However, the Czech 1st Tank with air support and attack helicopter support blew a hole in the 4th Panzer line and pushed units through almost to the autobahn. The Czech 20th Mech just south of Beyreuth pushed elements of… Continue
