Hillary Reiterates End of 'War on Terror' Phrase While Taliban Pledges White House Attack

Hillary Clinton, yesterday:

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the Obama administration has stopped using "war on terror," breaking with the Bush administration's terminology in describing the conflict with al Qaeda and militant Islam.

"The administration has stopped using the phrase, and I think that speaks for itself," Mrs. Clinton told reporters as she traveled here for a United Nations-led conference on Afghanistan.

Mrs. Clinton made her remarks in… Continue

What a First Punic War CDG might look like...

I recently had a look at the Hannibal variant for the First Punic War, yet found that it really didn't go far enough in adapting the system to the quite different character of the earlier clash of Rome and Carthage.

The variant only abstractly portrays naval warfare despite the First Punic War being largely decided at sea - and featuring arguably the largest sea battle in all history (in terms of the number of men involved).

Moreover, Sicily was the primary theatre of… Continue

Humor USMC Style

A large group of Taliban soldiers are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a sand-dune. "One Marine is better than ten Taliban". The Taliban commander quickly sends 10 of his best soldiers over the dune whereupon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence.

The voice then calls out "One Marine is better than a hundred Taliban soldiers". Furious, the Taliban commander sends his next best 100 troops over the dune and instantly a huge gun… Continue

First Impressions: Federation Commander

Having amassed a collection of Starfleet Battles (SFB) games and supplements, I SWORE I wasn't going to invest in Amarillo Design Bureau's (ABD's) Federation Commander.

That is, until someone on The Miniatures Page (TMP) offered a great deal for slightly-used copies of both Federation Commander: Klingon Border and Federation Commander Romulan Border. After reading the favorable reviews on TMP, I… Continue

Coming Soon: Video Previews, Tutorials, and More from Collins Epic Wargames

In the near future, I'll be launching some previews of my next game, Frontline General: San Pietro Infine, with the help of a tool called Jing, a video creation program. Through Jing, I'll verbalize and visually present some aspects of the working design, direction I'm heading, and more!

Also, I'll be using Jing to provide video combat examples and walkthrus of our existing released game, Frontline General: Italian Campaign… Continue

Medal of Honor Day

In the US, today is Medal of Honor Day--a poignant reminder that some of the miniatures and playing pieces in our hobby represent heroes who "served above and beyond the call of duty."

A friend of mine sent me this link from Stars and Stripes On-Line:

Two years ago, Bruce Crandall, a veteran here in western Washington State, finally received… Continue

Happy Motoring

I'm about to post on something controversial. Some people here shy away and hate the political discussions. This might be worse. Some think that religion has no place on ConsimWorld. I go further than matters of mere religion. Nonetheless, I must broach a matter of major controversy, one that is very important to me, and for which I seek your help.

You see, I'm in the market for a new car.

Right now I'm driving a 2001 Chevy Cavalier that I purchased in December 2000. It's… Continue

Has the Negative Economy affected you personally?

Well, it has me . My wife was laid off (workforce reduction as they call it) from her job as a the Community Outreach person for our local 'branch' of the Smart Start. No Child Left Behind shop - the Rockingham County Partnership for Children.

The women who runs the place, btw, is a single mother, lives in a commune, has her child home schooled (despite the mission of her unit to promote public services) and recently has a court date for misdemeanor passing of bad… Continue

AIG and Bills of Attainder

As soon as the leaders in the House and Senate started talking about about recovering the AIG bonuses by taxing them at close to 100%, a phrase whipped through my head: Bill of Attainder. Bills of attainder are expressly forbidden in Article I, Section 10 of the Constitution. These are post-facto laws, targeted at individuals or groups, punishing them without benefit of those inconvenient things like trials and due process.

Admittedly, I am not an attorney. But I do teach… Continue

I was reading this very dispiriting article in the Times about how folks in the administration have known about the AIG bonuses for months, how the folks at AIG are now saying they'd never have done any of it without the go-ahead from the Treasury and -- best of all -- how the plan to get AIG to pay the bonus money back appears to involve giving AIG still more taxpayer money which they can then hand back to us as 'repayment', while the new… Continue

Westward Expansion Discussions

Chad Oatman Comment by Chad Oatman 57 minutes ago

Delete Comment It's been some time since anything has been posted about this game, as I've been wrestling with finding a satisfying battle mechanic. Although no battles took place historically (only one minor skirmish) there was certainly the possibility of battles happening at any moment, so I wanted to include that possibility in the game. I think I have settled on a solution that I am happy with, will add to the… Continue

Playtesters Wanted for The Battle of Midway

I'm developing Paul Rohrbaugh's game on Midway for Turning Point Simulations, and we could use another good playtest group or two. This game uses the same system as Paul's earlier game on Cape Matapan, published a few years back for Microgame Design Group. Additionally, there's a second game, based on the "postcard game" concept popularized in Against the… Continue

Unhappy King Charles, The Burning Blue, Fab: The Bulge

In these days, after I bought my little eeepc, I installed on this little computer the last vassal and some modules. My intention is to reserve some space on the Hd for a couple of PBEM matches.

Since my home computer is for the most of time under siege from my two little sons (can you believe? They are almost three and just one year old, but have some king of insane attraction for the poor keyboard and the mouse...), I tought it was more than fair to use some space on the work computer… Continue
