Favorite Designer?

Wondering if anyone has a favorite designer out there?

I ordered France '40 last year. I fell in love with the components and the design of the game. I also have enjoyed several plays thus far, all solo. I am not sure how much can be attributed to GMT and how much to Mark Simonitch but I immediately pre-ordered his other titles through GMT. I was able to get a shrink-wrapped copy of The Caucasus…

I've Been Diced! episode 55: Jim Day

Hannibal: Rome Vs Carthage another golden (not too) oldie hits the table

Played game of Hannibal Rome Vs Carthage (Avalon Hill version) with my son (nned to make use of him whilst he is home) tonight and another topsy turvy but exciting card based game it proved to be.

Tactics/Strategy from us both a bit…

Sword Of Rome 3 player game

Got to try Sword Of Rome with my Dad and son (home for a few weeks from University) and to find out what a fun and interesting game it is.

10,000 Hours?

I saw a news piece on CBS Sunday Morning Show about practice and athletic success. Some have theorized that people, if they spend 10,000 hours practicing, can become accomplished at an activity.

So, if we apply that to war gaming...how many of us consider ourselves experts/accomplished because of our time in? Despite the protestations of my spouse I have not spent the requisite amount of time (but would love to try!).

I've Been Diced! episode 54: Kim Kanger

Kim Kanger, designer of Ici, C'Est La France! and Tonkin, discusses France's counterinsurgency wars, and how differences between these wars led to different game designs. We also discuss Kim's upcoming game on the siege of Dien Bien Phu. Strap in for another deep discussion of insurgencies and insurgency-related games.

The typhoon of wargame designer interviews continues! Coming up in future episodes: Jim Day (Panzer, Iron & Oak) and John Poniske (Lincoln's…

My great plans are laid to waste....

By the end of last year, I felt that my wargaming hobby had become complete.

I had all the games I had wanted, numerous feeds and "following" other wargamers like Kev Sharpe and others, I had written up a list of games which I aimed to play in 2014, and I had decided to stop buying anymore games apart from those on pre-order with Legion Wargames.

All of this has become undone.

As 2014 started, so did playing Lost Battles. A great game and I played…

I've Been Diced! episode 53: John Gorkowski on WWI wargames and a future WWI-like scenario

John Gorkowski, designer of WWI-based games like Guns Of August, Guns Of Galicia, Red Poppies, and In The Trenches, as well as the upcoming The Great Game. We talk about what fascinates us about WWI, the need to take a fresh look at a conflict before dropping game mechanics on them, and why a future conflict in the South China Sea might look a lot more like WWI than WWII. (That future scenario is the subject of John’s Game, Breaking The Chains). Plus, your host’s recent eBay purchase…
