Games We Learned About War and Wargaming From

This blog is inspired by Jim Werbaneth's review of FRANCE 1940 in his magazine, Line of Departure, Issue 66. He well describes how he learned both the history of the German invasion of France from the experience of playing the game (inspiring him to get and read books on the subject) and how the game was a "benchmark" in a number of design aspects we now take for granted (variable strengths for the Panzer Divisions, historical alternatives, and--of course--the mechanized… Continue

The US has finally reinvented counterinsurgency

The US was so upset after the defeat in Vietnam that they failed to recognize that the war was mainly lost politically. The military strategy became the scapegoat despite the fact that the counterinsurgency was in fact quite successful during the final years. At Fort Bragg huge amount of documentation on how to conduct counterinsurgency was actually burned in the courtyard! The message was clear: Never ever get entangled in such a war again!

I often wondered why the lesson from… Continue

"I Beat the Crap Out of This Guy:" Eight-Year-Old Hero Saves Sister From Abduction

I want to see this kid's interview played at the predator's trial. Even better, I want to see it played on TV in the prison, after he's sent there. Then he can explain to his crimies how he was beaten up by an eight-year-old kid.

News Report From WPXI Channel 11 - Pittsburgh

Now matter what though, this kid is THE MAN!!!

The Man... The Myth... The Dio... Rest in Peace

Ronnie James Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer today, and died at the age of 67.

For those who might be unaware, he was one of the greatest rock singers of all time, a man with an unmistakable, inimitable voice, famous for his vocals with Rainbow and Black Sabbath as well as his solo work. Most recently he toured with a lineup of Black Sabbath going under the name Heaven & Hell, after his debut album with Sabbath.…

Classic Wargames and Other Titles You Can't Stop Playing

I was conversing with Wittman over his observation that there really hasn't been all that much real innovation in board wargaming of late. I remember having a similar conversation with Jon Compton not that long ago. We hearkened back to Tom Cundiff and his OLD SOLDIERS… Continue

Surveying World War I Tactical Ground Games

Given the explosion of tactical level squad games for World War II, it's only natural that some of this would "bleed over" into World War I. Thought it was time to talk about some of the more common/widespread designs covering that era!

In the beginning, there was SPI's SOLDIERS. Vintage 1973. Each piece was a company and the… Continue

Play RISK! Online

Well, Pogo.com now has an online version of RISK you can play for free. They've had Chess, they've had BATTLESHIP. But now this!

Wonder if we can convince them to put some of those "lite" wargames out there and entice new blood into the hobby (and into VASSAL, CYBERBOARD, etc). MEMOIR '44, AXIS AND ALLIES, BATTLE…
