On Abstraction. Brian's Designer Notes for Uprising and Army of Shadows

Once again my blog has been hijacked by a more capable mind than mine. Today Brian Train discusses his views on abstract games, specifically Uprising and Army of Shadows, the games in Yaah! #2. And without further ado, walking across the stage, Mister. BRIAN. TRAIIIIIIIN!!! Give it up folks. …

Looking for gamers in central Florida (Clearwater area)

Myself and one other board gamer, Steve Askew, are looking for other gamers near the Clearwater area of Florida.  We are fairly experienced gamers who enjoy a wide range of face to face board war gaming.  We are particularly interested in the Operational Combat Series from MMP, and as such are currently exploring their newest jewel, Beyond the Rhine, but have not gotten past September turns yet.   However we are open to other suggestions.

We have a Clearwater location where we can…

Shayne Logan Dishes on Old School Tactical Design

Shayne Logan is the designer of Old School Tactical for Flying Pig Games. As we reach the final tweaking stage before sending the game to the printers, I thought it might be a good idea to let him explain his thinking in designing the game. Take it away, Shayne.…

Hastings, Stamford, and the Shields and Swords System

Tom Russell and I have been working together since he designed Blood on the Alma for Line of Fire Magazine. He is a meticulous, aggressive editor, clever game designer, and all around easy guy to work with. I asked him for some designer notes on the Shields and Swords system, the engine that powered both Stamford Bridge and a Hill Near Hastings in Yaah! Magazine issue #1. Here's what I got. A…

AFTERSHOCK published

It's not so much a conflict simulation as one of military operations other than war—specifically, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief—but I'm very pleased to announce that AFTERSHOCK has now been published via The Game Crafter.

AFTERSHOCK has its origins…

Into the Pocket: The TV Show

This is my first time. Please be gentle. I've never done a video blog before. I'm not even sure if this is a video blog. I do, however, promise that it isn't a 30 minute drone-a-thon, something that seems to be in vogue in gaming circles right now. Nor a recanting of my battle with serious depression. Something else that seems to be popular. I'm too stupid to be depressed.…

Looking for Opponents - Northern VA

Greetings,

I am looking for wargamers in my local area (Burke VA) and am sending notes to a few people who appear close on CONSIM.

I used to play wargames a lot in the glory days of SPI-Avalon Hill… but work and family forced me to put further playing off for a few decades (57 years old now).  I am looking for two things.

   -  I teach at the Marine Corps War College and I plan to use a few games in the classroom.  I need some folks who will help explain some of…

I've Been Diced! episode 69: Troy Goodfellow on computer and board games

Troy Goodfellow, founder of the Three Moves Ahead podcast, joins me for a discussion of computer strategy games versus boardgames. What do computer games do well that boardgames don't, and vice-versa? What can the two genres learn from each other? Plus, this episode's Game Off The Beaten Path is W1815, a brilliant little game about the Battle of Waterloo.

Designing Into the Pocket -a Guest Post by Mark Stille

I've known Mark Stille for over twenty years. We met when we were both getting our masters at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. Even then we gamed together and talked game design. It's a pleasure to feature his game, Into the Pocket, in issue #3 of Yaah! Magazine. Originally posted on Over Da…

Yaah! Magazine Why We Aren't Avalon Hill's General

Seems like there are a lot of gaming magazines on the market today, and many potential customers have asked me why I feel that our magazine, Yaah! Magazine, is different. Here are my thoughts, originally published at Consimworld, on the subject.…

I've Been Diced! episode 68: Randy Lein (Legion Wargames) and Roger Miller (Revolution Games)

Not just one guest, but two! Roger Miller of Revolution Games and Randy Lein of Legion Wargames take time away from Consimworld Expo to talk about life as wargame publishers, muse about the state of the hobby, give us some previews into upcoming games, and give sage advice to anyone interested in submitting a new design to a company like theirs. Plus, I'm not done talking about space empire games, particularly since there are more stories they could be telling than just another cardboard…
