It's Never Too Late

A good many of us here have college degrees, and some have multiple degrees. Here's the story of a guy who, in well-earned retirement as a successful businessman felt that he was a "dumb-dumb" because he didn't have one. So at age eighty-four, he enrolled at Lynn University in Florida. Transfer credits from classes taken many years before help put him close to sophomore status.

Jack Slotnick was a soldier in the… Continue

A House Divided: second game

Second game for my friend Luca and me.
I play the North he plays the South.
June 1862: Washington falls, the South wins.

I lost in a very stupid way.
I was very aggressive and tried to push through Cairo: I conquered Memphis and Nashville, but I didn't manage to go beyond and seriuosly threaten the South.
In the last three turn, Luca used very wisely a couple of crack units and conquered Baltimore. Then he finished Washington…

Game Tutorial Screencasts

I've begun posting some game tutorial screencasts in support of BEDA FOMM. My goal is to cover the major rule sections first, and then get into actual game play and strategy/tips. Obviously this is an amateur effort on all counts -- I'm simply shooting these clips on a single take and not really doing any editing. Still, I'm hoping the quality is good enough to assist players with… Continue

Translation finished!

I've translated No Retreat! cards in Italian. I'm currently working on a simple graphic reproduction of the cards, to print them and actually use them.
I'll upload them on BGG as soon as possible.

Breakthrough in Zombie Science

Zombies do exist. Scientists in Thailand have discovered a type of fungus, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, that infects ants, taking control of their brains. The fungus directs the ant to go where its death would be ideal for the fungus' ability to spread itself. In the meantime, the infection converts the ant's internal tissues into sugars that help the fungus grow.

I also preserves the ant's exoskeleton, in fact reinforcing and sealing it to keep out microbes and other… Continue

You Are Not So Smart

Probably off topic - but interesting stuff.

I find wargamers, for the most part, are smart deep thinking people who are in the hobby because they are not shallow thinkers.

The Intertubes offer up a lot of crap, but also offers up some real gems.

I thoroughly enjoy this blog;

Remembering the Battle of Britain

Seventy years on, this still demands to be remembered. But who will? This is one of the better stories from the BBC website, showing how memories of the Battle are fading.

A Fading Finest Hour?

Further, why would the British educational system downgrade coverage of the Battle, and allow this fight for liberty to lose recognition among later generation? My own… Continue

Recruiting players for WW2

WW2 is starting again. We need Tactical Level players. Those are Lt. Generals in the army, Squadron Leaders in the air, and Captains at sea. TAC players handle all combat in the game via email.

The new game is starting this month, August 2010, so contact me soon.

This is not just a Tactical game. You can earn promotions to Operational and even Strategic Levels as the war progresses.

No Retreat! card translation

I've started to translate No Retreat! cards in Italian.
I'm planning to translate 5 cards/day so it should be done in 5 days: more haste, less speed...

I don't know how many people will be interested in this translation, but I'd like to play the game with my father who does not speak English.

(miniature) wargaming COIN in the classroom

I'm playing around with the idea using a wargame to illustrate the basics of small unit warfare as an ancillary element of a course next year. (This probably falls into the category of "ideas I'll be too busy to follow up on," but there it is.) I could go with a computer simulation... but there are certain challenges in teaching from that in a group. I could go with a boardgame, but they're rather dry, abstract, complicated, and non-visual for non-gamers. The third option (assuming it…

Practical Wargaming on Yahoo

Here's an interesting Yahoo Group (I am currently waiting on being accepted). Dan Fraser is the moderator/creator and with his NATO credentials I would imagine he has a lot to offer the hobby. I'm sorry to see he is not a member of this group. Has anyone here delt with him on a hobby basis?…

Digital dropbox

Been looking for a long time for an easy method to transfer large files - mostly PDFs of Rulebooks to friends I play games with so they can read rules before we play from older titles.
