Der Schweinekrieg

With suitable apologies for the Google Translate German (a local dialect you see), the three-part saga of the mythical Schweinekrieg [Pig War] between the fictional 18th century armies of Lützelhard and Dautenstein:

Part 1: Der Schweinekrieg [The Pig War]

Part 2: …

Borg Madness this weekend at Conquest-Pacificon

I just had a glance at the schedule for this weekend's convention in Santa Clara, CA. between myself and the Santa Rosa crew, there are two or three sessions of C&C:A (using 25mm miniatures), a session of Memoir '44 (using 15mm miniatures), a session of C&C:N (using 15mm miniatures), and a session of C&C: ACW (aka Battle Cry) using 15mm miniatures......   A full dose of Richard Borg's gaming  goodness; drop by the tables if you get a chance. It's always good to meet up with…

PanzerBlitz II Hill Of Death (Carentan) outing

Played a game with my Father of this game which I have had for a bit but not actually played (one of a growing number !!).

Used the Carentan supplement (that I was very generously gifted by a chap from 'Oz'tralia).

Turned out to be a really good scenario and a rather good game system (similar to White Star Rising but with more depth and historical rather than generic scenarios) despite rather…

Up Front redo ?

Saw this on BGG interesting indeed if it comes to pass :-)

Valley Games is very excited to announce that we have been offered the opportunity to produce Up Front. In association with the original designer, Courtney Allen, we will reproduce this classic title with improved and enhanced rules, new artwork and new graphic design. We will use Kickstarter to fund the project with a planned launch date of December 2012. More information to come as we get closer to the…

Wargaming at a Writers Conference

I managed to do some gaming, of sorts, at last month's writers conference:

Computer Wargame Blitzkrieg

Over the past few months, I have been adding to my collection of computer wargames & strategy games. I know a lot of people will shy away from computer wargames for various reasons, but I find them perfect for me and my life. This not to say I have abandoned board wargames, (as I still have a decent collection of these, even though I have thinned them out quite a bit) as I do plan to get some of them out and give them some playing time.

But with work, wife, kids & cats,…

I've Been Diced! episode 39: Martin Wallace

Martin Wallace talks about his wide, wide portfolio of games, when he got the inspiration for many of them, how he starts the design with a fundamental mechanic, why he doesn't get train games, and what to expect in his new Doctor Who game. Plus, why the heck would you want multiple games on the same topic?

The podcast MP3 file…

Coast of France June 6, 1944

3rd Division command

As the Ivy division prepares for their assault on Utah, there command looks out over the beaches to the land beyond. A flat tableland like terrain dotted with few trees and cover. Good for them to see the defenders but bad that there is no cover. They will have to make it off the beaches as fast as they can.

BOOM...BOOM...BOOM, the cruisers guns start the opening barrage against the beach defenses. A another destroyer moves up to provide…

Game Day

Went out to play Virgin Queen opposed.

Full table of players. We only got a few turns in
(in many hours), but this is the type of gaming &
group that I should like.

Instead though, I'm just fatigued. Much as from
the couple other times I've done opposed play
in the last couple years (other than with the wife).

Beginning to think that I've just become too asocial to really enjoy anymore.

I've Been Diced! episode 38: Jerry Taylor

Jerry Taylor stops by to discuss his games, Hammer of the Scots, Crusader Rex, and Richard III. What makes the Middle Ages great source material for wargames? How do subtle differences in Columbia block games translate into major game effects? How do you simulate asymmetric situations, such as the Third Crusade and the War of the Roses, while still making the game fun to play? Plus, some musings on what wargame companies owe us, if anything. …

I've Been Diced! episode 37: Adam Starkweather

Adam Starkweather tells us about his collaborations with Japanese designers on A Victory Lost, Warriors Of God, Fire In The Sky, and A Most Dangerous Time. Adam also tells us about the origins of his two mega-tactical games, Devil's Cauldron and Where Eagles Dare, and his upcoming wargames, including a Normandy version of Cauldron/Eagles. Plus, our panelists provide pointers on pedagogy -- or, some tips on teaching boardgames to new players.…

Oregon Lamination 2mm Clippers

Well, I've finally received my OL 2mm clippers, as much discussed here in Consimworld. I've had some success with clipping counters using this new tool. I do find It difficult, especially, to clip the half-inch counters as I sometimes take off an "edge" in addition to an corner. The solution is to turn the clipper "upside down" and monitor the clipping, making sure you only take off the nub. I've found it much easier to trim larger counters.

Is it worth the price? Maybe not.... Unless you… Continue
