Advanced Squad Leader: Advocation or Career?

For the record, I've been with the Squad Leader family of games since they came out thirty years ago. My copy of Squad Leader doesn't have the purple sky, but it is close.

I follow it through GI: Anvil of Victory, and then waited patiently for Advanced Squad Leader to come out. The day it appeared at my local hobby shop, the owner was thrilled to sell me copies of the rulebook and Beyond Valor, both for the profits and to shut up my… Continue

Finding the Balance

During my brief absence, I spent a lot of my free time reading David Halberstam's The Coldest Winter, his final book and an outstanding history of the early stages of the Korean War. Inspired by that work, I recently started re-playing one of my favorite scenarios from the original Operational Art of War: Korea 50-51. I have been playing this scenario since 1998, often against my friend CJ who typically runs the Communist side.

But playing the scenario concurrently with reading this… Continue

Mix tube - create music playlists from youtube videos

This is really cool - MixTube.

Simply stated, this tool automates putting together audio streams of your favorite tunes in youtube videos.

Really nice - I've made a Beatles playlist based on another's and can listen to them as if I had a CD without clicking from one video to the next.

Bill's Beatles

Surely the RIAA is not going to like this!!!

Congress of Gamers

I know I'm posting this a bit late, but I will be attending Congress of Gamers outside of DC this weekend. I think I'll only be able to make it for Saturday, but I'm not sure yet. I may join the Here I Stand game, depending on what time I arrive. There are also a number of games I'd love to try (I own them but haven't played them yet): Afrika II, Red Star Rising, and Corps Command: Totensonntag.

Drop me a note if you'll be there. I'm looking forward to going. And this year, I get to… Continue

Buckets to Blame for Global temperature anomaly after and during WW2.

Blame the Buckets

Human "error"

The global temperature graph is a combination of temperatures taken on land and at sea. When the researchers looked at the land measurements only they saw no dip in 1945. Records taken at sea, however, do show the dip. This suggests that it may be an artefact of how such measurements were taken during the… Continue

Remembering James Murphy...

I was trying to enjoy a long weekend vacation in San Diego, CA despite being under the weather, but one hobby-related thought entered my mind while cruising along and taking in San Diego, La Jolla, Del Mar, etc....

James Murphy

He was the man behind Command Perspectives which published Sharpsburg and Road to Washington, part of the "War of the Rebellion" series. The games made quite a splash given its detailed treatment of… Continue

Refraining from Political Postings

I'd like to ask everyone's indulgence to refrain from political postings on our social network. There are plenty of other online venues for this, including the Literary Corner of our Discussion Forum, so I think it would be best for all involved if we kept such a sensitive matter off the social network airwaves to the collective relief of all. Thank you for your understanding...I'm sure there is plenty of gaming and hobby-related discussions we can all focus on here!

John… Continue

Sick of Politics here? Dosomefink!

For the wargamer seeking wargamers to talk about politics, I recommend dosomefink.

It is a great place, and I suspect some folks here already go there.

Rednecks will Rule the World!

One of my other haunts is the BFCGF; you know it don't you?

Well, one of the fine folks there posted a link to a wonderful article by an American across the pond.

S&T No. 242 - They Died With Their Boots On, Vol 2 - Chasing Villa

For Labor Day Weekend, I decided to try out "They Died With Their Boots On", Vol. 2. This was originally published in S&T 242 and there's actually two games, the US Campaign in the Old Northwest against the Indians/British in 1791-94 and Pershing's pursuit of Pancho Villa.

My overall impression is that it's an interesting challenge in a small package (not a bad thing at all). I played the Pershing scenario and one of the most… Continue
