I now have the winxp version of Panzer General for download. Noticable differences to the DOS version is sharper graphics, larger map area displayed and slightly different menu system.
It is 90mb, which has all the movies, however, there is also a PanzerGenerallite which has no movies and is only 12mb, and it is also available to download.

Hey guys,

I'm finally catching up from being gone for a week.

Looks like we'll be running a demonstration of HELLENES next Thursday so if you've picked up the game and want a quick way to jump in, sitting in on a live online demo is a great way to learn FAST.

Due to popular demand I am also planning a series of demonstrations of EMPIRE OF THE SUN!

(I'll wait until the World Series is concluded as many guys are watching… Continue

What makes for "Realism" in board wargames? And why?

For me, so-called "realism" is defined purely by the psychological state of the player--how close is it to that of his historical counterpart? This means I tend to classify "design by effect" games in the realistic category just as much (if not more) than games that seek to explicitly model what actually happens. I am probably in the minority here, but that's just how I see it.

Tactical games are the hardest to be "realistic" in that sense, because it's that level that the smell of… Continue

Mentoring Board Wargame Noobs/Newbies

What games and what techniques do you favor for getting new players into the hobby? I have two approaches--much depends on the age and experience of the player. Basically, there's the adult players who have more than an average interest in military history and then there's the kids who naturally gravitate towards games on conflict.

For the latter, having those easy games with figures of some sort work best. Find out their likes regarding subject matter--be it tanks, planes, or… Continue

Classics versus Classics

What makes for a "classic" wargame? And what wargame do you think deserves the appellation "classic?" We all know the so-called "Avalon Hill Classics" -- the original D-DAY, WATERLOO, 1965 version of BATTLE OF THE BULGE, STALINGRAD, AFRIKA KORPS. No doubt there are more.

For me, a classic wargame is one that seems to keep bringing us back to play even as the game ages. It intrigues us, it never loses its freshness, it is something of a mental… Continue

Go here to download the rules.

The playtest version of Tonkin rules 2.2b can now be downloaded. It is not by far the final rules. It will be adjusted and clarified numerous times, but it gives an idea where I wish to take 2nd edition Tonkin. The problem with the 1st edition was that it was too long and too many small unnecessary rules. I want the… Continue
