New Battle For South Mountain game?

Looks like John Poniske (Worthington Games's HEARTS AND MINDS: VIETNAM 1965-1975 and MMP's KING PHILIP'S WAR) has a new game on the Battle for South Mountain in the works with Legion wargames. Titled FIRE ON THE… Continue

FACEBOOK group HISTORICAL BOARD GAMES

A lot of you already know this, but for those who don't, Facebook has a group called Historical Board Games. They just held a contest where one entrant got a free copy of Collins' Wargames OPERATION SPEARPOINT (tactical card game based on the Italian Front in 1943).

Check it out here.

The Race is over

I finished Race for Tunis on Saturday, and although I only played the basic game (just to get myself accustomed to the rules) it was a very enjoyable and engaging game, and I certainly look forward to playing the advanced rules.
Terrain and artillery play a pivotal role in this basic game, and I am sure they will play a vital part in the advanced game, certainly the artillery will not be so domineering with the advanced rules - I predict.
I was tempted to go straight in an play…

volgagrad fin

the german's ran out of steam in late winter 42/43- there was some exciting exchange of lenningrad and moscow twice! the added bonus in combat of some of the new rules cleared much of the board with the duel taking/retaking of the capital giving very much an afrika korps feel. in all it added a bit of colour to this b&w classic but the basics remain. my final impression of 'standard" STALINGRAD AND MY VARIENT return to my initial immpression-and the opinions of historians-the german;s… Continue

volgagrad played deux

APRIL 42- IF anything these new rules may hurt the german player by enticing him to take risk's he thinks may be "covered" by the stukas.as it stands, the germans have not broken the dniepr and have just lost Minsk to a stack added by the russian guard katyushka's! army groupe centre is decimated-there is a stalemate around lenningrad(nothing suprising there).… Continue

Counterinsurgency Redux--Plea for a "Monstergame" on the American War for Independence

I'm often in conversations with my military friends who also happen to be wargamers (most of these friends are more and more retired guys, fewer and fewer active duty types, which is sad--but that's another blog). We waxed nostalgic about Avalon Hill's 1776 game and expressed our impressions of Mark… Continue

VOLGAGRAD PLAYED

DID the first 4 1/2 turns of my stalingrad variant-it's quite fun and (suprise to me) does not unbalance the game. the stuka "nukes" (1,2-elim,3-4demobilized,5-6 no effect) add a neat twist to planing attacks-you can use them on "unattacked" stacks (as long as they are within 3 hexes after movement-or "risk" them on a soak of stack or add them to a normal attack. the odds shifting "fuel-air" bombs are…

Military Times

This is a new monthly magazine which has just started this month, and I found it by pure chance, bought it and liked it a lot.
It's good to see that there must be sufficient interest in military history for a publisher to warrant a new monthly mag.

BOB DYLAN

In the long heart-to-heart between the president and the Rolling Stone magazine editor, Obama recalls his encounter with the living legend, who played at the White House for “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement” in February:

“[Bob Dylan] wouldn’t come to the rehearsal; usually, all these guys are practicing before the set in the evening. He didn’t want to take a picture with me; usually all the talent is dying to take a picture… Continue
