Who Wants a Boat?

For the discerning yachtsman, the Royal Navy is selling the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible, decommissioned five years ago in a cost-cutting move. Surely this Falklands War veteran would impress the folks at the local boat club, as well as making a pretty good helipad and, for those who might have a spare Harrier in the garage, an airport.

Old naval vessels go on the block regularly. This time though,… Continue

Best piece of work on counterinsurgency

One of the best pieces of work regarding counterinsurgency! It was a great inspiration when I designed Ici, c'est la France!:

Decision Games Folio Series versus Victory Point Games: The Chase Is On!

They're back--the venerable and more beloved titles from the old Simulations Publications Incorporated (SPI) folio game list, updated and reissued by Decision Games. Oh, and there are handful of new titles added to the mix. Check out the list at the DG website here.

The good news is that those old "dog" titles from the various old SPI Quadrigames don't seem to present in the mix. For example, while…

Happy Thanksgiving

Hello fellow Consimers,

Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving. I have a lot to be thankful for this year.... Employment, family, my understanding wife.... But I'm also thankful for this community (I hate that term, but I'll use it anyway) of gamers. And thank you, John, for making all of this happen.

Battle of the Bulge.....first game (with full optional rules) under my belt

Well that was a good introductory scenario for this game (6 turns), and showed the power of the German attack against the dogged but constantly pulling back American forces.
The Germans won by 2 victory points.

If I had used the third scenario, which has 16 turns, it would have demonstrated the enormous limitations of the German fuel reserves which would have also been put up against an ever increasing flow of American reinforcements, which would have really ground the…

Saipan & Tinian - Legion Wargames

O.K. this is my first game purchased (I also got The Jewish War) from Legion Wargames. So I was not sure what to expect. The game comes with two Maps of both Islands (Tinian is a 11" X 17" and Siapan is a 17" X 22"), three rule books (basic rules, Specific rules for Siapan and Tinian), all the charts and and tables, and some 528 counters.

Saipan & Tinian are their first effort in their Island War Series (IWS)

As I said since this was my first purchase from them and I have… Continue

Britannia PBeM for new players

After a long hiatus I’ve starting running a friendly game of Britannia by email as a way of helping players learn how that’s done, as well as just playing the game itself. They were going to play anyway, so I stepped in to be the fourth player and help out. I want to run a second game alongside that, so can fit in another 3 players if they want to put in the…

Taking notes whilst playing games????

I have just gone over the advanced rules again, and I have written out an Order of Play for myself, just to make sure I do everything in the right order, as there are air missions to consider at different points in the game turn (some of which only the Allies can do) and German fuel reserves to consider.

I will be using all of the advanced/optional rules in this scenario, which is the first of three scenarios to choose from.
I don't know about anyone else, who plays games…

Battle of the Bulge.....

Turn 3, 18th December

The germans have mounted a strong attack on the thin Olive line, making the line even thinner

With the road secured, the Germans are in a strong position to move their armour fast on the roads ahead, and to push back the remains American units

Then the germans lauch their…

Red Star Rising: Barbarossa Update

I'm entering turn 8 (of 12 for this scenario). The Germans suffered in turn 7 (mud turn) from lack of air support. Turn 8 begins the winter turns. The Russians have suffered terrible losses as is seen by the stacks of removed units.

However, Soviet reinforcements seem almost endless and even removed units can come back. In the next photo we see the stabilized lines on the approach to Moscow. The Germans have the advantage in striking power… Continue

ANZIO a quick take

i just got the first ed. of this-had the 3rd ed as a kid and remembered it as a good solo game. just playing the basic ver.-it;s a lot of fun-there is some deep weirdness in the writing of the rules and charts-the turn card reads right to left?? having said that it is easy enough once you "get" it. the controversial visual of the mapboard is really not a factor-it looks weird from far away better up close. and up close is how you spend most off your time trying to find a potential breach… Continue

Free Book Carrier Glorious - The Life and Death of an Aircraft Carrier by John Winton

I bought this book in a second hand book stall for 50p. If anyone wants it, send me a message to my inbox and I will place your name in the hat and I will draw out the winner on 18th November. I will pay the postage to anywhere in the world.
It is a fully detailed book, and can be heavy going in places, but a good read.…

Battle of the Bulge

Just finished setting up for my first ever game. I have decided to go the whole hog and use all of the optional rules, instead of my usual tack of playing a basic game first.

and of course, I cannot do anything without Tiggy joining in!!! Luckily, he never moved a single counter…
