SETTLERS OF CATAN game makes front page of WALL STREET JOURNAL, 17 Dec 2009

Apparently this game is all the rage in Silicon Valley as it teaches the basics of entrepreneurship, at least according to this WSJ article entitled "An Old-School Board Game Goes Viral Among Silicon Valley's Techie Crowd" with the subtitle "'Settlers of Catan' Players Log Real Face Time; Strategizing With Sheep and Bricks."

Flashpoint: Central Front VII Corps Scenario for Hof Gap

Hi everyone;

Attached is a pdf file with my updates for the VII Corps scenario for Hof Gap using the FP:CF counters and reconciling the various articles and rules. My first stab at this. My goal is to have a document that a player can use to play the entire scenario without having to go through all of the various iterations of the Central Front series. This, and the Flashpoint rules... No chemical rules yet, but that is coming.

Please comment!

Flashpoint: Central Front, Hof Gap, Turn 2

Flashpoint: Central Front, Hof Gap, Turn 2

Day 2 bought a little time for the NATO allies. In the south, the German 4th Panzer division held off an attack by the Czech 20th MRD north of Amberg, but remnants of K troop 2d ACR, who were already disorganized, were not able to hold their own against elements of the CZ 20th MRD at the bottom of the map. However, the two CZ regiments could not exploit due to supply considerations and… Continue

Flashpoint: Central Front VII Corps Defense of Hof Gap

Flashpoint: Central Front, The VII Corps Defense of Hof Gap

I am in the process of playing the old SPI/S&T Central Front series using VG’s Flashpoint: Golan rules, new counters made by Chris Fawcett, and a few tweeks and rules by Dan Steuben. I spent some time reading and reconciling the various Moves and S&T articles, and old game rules, with the new counter manifest, and will shortly be creating a revised and comprehensive VII Corps scenario for Hof Gap. This… Continue

Christmas Games

What memories are your fonest in terms of receiving and playing games on Christmas? My favorite Christmas in game terms had to be the year I received both Panzerblitz and France 1940 - I vaguely believe that year also saw Origins of WW II come into the house that same Christmas. Other years would see Fortress America and Battle Cry (I was maybe 8). I also need to add in when Katie got me a new version by L2 of Russian Campaign after I came back from Iraq in 2003 - how time flies. Or when my ex… Continue

The Most Shameless Thieves in the World

You have to be an absolute piece of crap, with no respect for history or decency, to pull off this crime:

My only joy is that the five semi-humans who committed the crime were caught, along with what they stole.

Fracturing of Wargaming?

When I was at Ryan Schultz's house playing ADVANCED SQUAD LEADER in his LITTLE STALINGRAD VII mini-tournament, we were talking about how there were many squad-level tactical wargame systems, but that ASL had the largest player following. Which got me to thinking--has wargaming fractured to the point where everyone has their own niche/favorite game system and it makes it harder to find opponents who can agree on a game?

I haven't had this problem here in… Continue

Ici, c'est la France! podcast

There is a podcast made now about Ici, c'est la France! and which is made by Moritz Eggert (the shows of Westpark Gamers and Dicetower). He says Ici resembles something of a wargame revolution. Listen here.

The Caucasus Campaign: Demo TONIGHT!

Tonight at 8:30pm EST, Dave Stiffler and I will be showing off Mark Simonitch's latest game, "The Caucasus Campaign!"

This is probably the fastest playing of any of Mark's designs that I've played. It's loaded with replay capability and has just the right amount of chrome to make for a very rewarding gaming experience. If you're a tournament player, you definitely want to check this game out!

You can get all the details here:… Continue
