December 2010 Blog Posts (31)

End of the year and what a year...

I have posted a brief end of the year article at my wargaming blog:

http://bluntforcegamer.com/?p=3434

Looking back at the year it was a great year for wargaming, not so great for MMO’s. We had in the wargaming genre War in the East released, some great Battlefield Academy action, Revolution Under Siege, Decisive

Campaigns, Hannibal vs Rome and many others. Matrix Games, HPS,

Slitherine and John…

Computer Wargame UIs: A Battle Lost Through Attrition

Over at my weblog, Tea Leaves, I have posted an article - well, OK, perhaps it's really a rant - called A Battle Lost Through Attrition.  The subject matter is, essentially, that simplicity of user interface matters, and that needlessly baroque UIs actively prevent new players from entering our hobby.  I used three operational-level games…

Well, that was 2010...

Well, that about wraps it up for this year.  With the release of C&C Napoleonics and the new edition of Battle Cry, 2010 was the year of BROG for me. In addition, as one may observe in my "photo" section, I also purchased Kallistra terrain boards so I could play the aforementioned games with 15mm miniatures.  I ended the year working on two armies (Rome and Carthage) for C&C: Ancients, although this time in 6mm.  (Once again, see my photo section...)

Ah, next year... …

It's a Weapon, Not a Toy

The Israel Defense Forces have a long-held reputation for excellence.  Then you have these guys.

Hooray for standards.

Squad Battles: Advance of the Reich AAR: Crossing the Berezina

I hadn't been paying too much attention to Squad Battles lately thanks to my resurgence in John Tiller's Campaign Series. Today however I decided to fire up Advance of the Reich, update it and mess around in a simple scenario to make sure my mods had installed perfectly. Well as all things go the next thing I know I am fighting a pitched battle that I had no intention of… Continue

Hello all. A former MMO gaming site the articles go way back to 2007 but not its focus is pure…

www.hexdraw.com/rename.exe

I did a small program (www.hexdraw.com/rename.exe)

it let you select a file folder, it then renames all pictures in that folder according to the date the picture was shot. (e.g. 001.jpg, 002.jpg, 003.jpg ... 099.jpg)

Thereafter it is easier to view the photos in that file folder especially when from different dates and

sources.…

War Room & Man Cave--Send Us Your Game Room pictures!

Everybody needs a STAVKA, a "Wolf's Lair," or some other place to gather wargaming friends to play:

Walters War Room, circa 2007.

Admittedly, I am most impressed with Bert Schneider's Man Cave/War Room decor seen…

History of Jews in the U.S. Military

http://www.aleph-institute.org/history-of-jews-in-the-us-military.html

This is a great article about Jews serving in the US military.

Today, Jewish men and women in the military are valiantly continuing the tradition of serving in our country’s military. They are in Afghanistan, Iraq and Haiti as a part of America’s Armed Forces. Some have given their lives, many have been…

Whats on your 2011 "TO PLAY" or "TO BUY" list?

This year has seen my wargame collection go from 0 to 37. This was achieved within a limited budget so ebay became my main source for games. Some of the games I bought left a lot to be desired, some were absolute gems, and most were pretty average enjoyable games.

Due to the Austerity plans of the UK government, their plan increase of VAT by 2.5% from Jan 1st 2011 has meant that any further purchases in 2011 will have to be extremely shrewd. Luckily, the company I work for is giving…

Labyrinth: The War on Terror 2001-?

So I just recently bought GMT's Labyrinth: The War On Terror and played a few solo games. This is my first card-driven strategy game and I'm really enjoying it. The events are interesting and I find myself gaining new perspectives on modern geopolitics. A few people on BGG have written some fairly scathing reviews about the realism of the game and although the game does really simplify many aspects of the GWOT, I think I've learned something new while playing the game, so in that respect,…

Golden SPI Oldies We'd Like to See Re-Released

Since Decision Games is republishing classic SPI titles, are there games you wish they'd get back into circulation?
