"Golden" Age of Wargaming

It may be obvious, but the Internet has certainly been a large factor in the current success (or continued existence) of the wargaming hobby. (It's been a big part in the resurgence of board-gaming as well, but that's not the point of this post.)

We are in a "Golden Age" of war-gaming. The Grognards among us look back at the late 70's when SPI was an active company as an important time in the hobby, but I suspect more war-games are being published today by more companies than we could… Continue

The Pacific

The Pacific, the new HBO mini-series produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg (the team behind Band of Brothers) debuted last night. What did anyone think?

I particularly enjoyed the comments by veterans at the beginning of the show. The action starts at Guadalcanal and there were fewer battle scenes than I expected, but I find the episode compelling and look forward to more.

Hello again.

I've been in my "World of Warcraft" cave since last August, but the coming of spring and some new game titles are coaxing me into the sunlight.

GMT's Washington's War has me salivating a little bit. I'm looking forward to playing this re-make (re-imagining?) of We the People.

Also, the new Yalu! by Compass Games has attracted my attention.

I've played neither of these games, but would like to hear what anyone else has to say about them. What's the buzz on these…

Some Thoughts on Dice Rolling.

Dice are an integral part of wargaming. In most wargames dice are used to resolve combat.

For most of my gaming life I have struggled to "not blame the dice". When things go wrong in a game, it's easy to blame the dice. But vocally blaming the dice just ruins the game for everyone. I know I dislike it when an opponent starts blaming the dice when a game goes "wrong". It really serves no purpose and makes the game not fun for everyone involved. Intellectually, I know the dice are not… Continue

Red Dragon Rising

Played Red Dragon Rising (S&T #250) for the first time yesterday. My first reaction upon hearing about the topic of this game was unfavorable. But when I heard the system was similar to War At Sea/Victory in the Pacific, I was immediately intrigued. After one play, I am not disappointed and you can count me as a fan of the game. The game is relatively easy to learn and once you get a feel for the system plays quickly. The system is a "kissing cousin" of the War at Sea system modified… Continue

GMT West Spring 2008

Just got back from the GMT West Weekend held in Hanford, CA (April 24 - 27). This is my second GMT Weekend and this time was as good as the last time (Spring 2007). I have to say that the GMT experience is the best convention experience I have had. I really like the informal atmosphere and the fact that everyone there is a wargamer. More than wargames get played during a GMT Weekend, but everyone attending is a wargamer.

I played the new version of Blackbeard, Manoeuvre and Kaiser's… Continue
