Looking for Chicago wargamer to help with Fletcher Pratt material

Hi All,

John Curry, the UK publisher of the Classics of Wargaming series of reprints of importnat books needs help from a responsible wargamer in the Chicago area. He has been assembling informationand original materials related to the Fletcher Pratt Naval Wargame and its early players. One of those players, a Dan Dorcy, passed away some little time ago.  Dan Dorcy played the Fletcher Pratt game extensively in the 1970's and John talked to him a couple of years ago. Sadly he passed away just before John started the Pratt book. Someone connected with Dorcy contacted John about possibly salvaging some of the stuff he had in his home before it gets thrown out. This includes

  • 2 file cabinets full of paperwork, letters and ship plans.
  • Bookcase of folders that seem to be instructions on building ships.
  • Miniature ships and photos. box of pratt books.
  • A wall of splashmarks stuff on the back porch that need to be moved before winter. (Splashmarks was a newsletter dealing with the game.)
  • The basement is very interesting collection of tools, ship parts, the molds, and the casting machines.

John had this to say, "The miniature ships and photos would be interesting, but the paperwork might be more so. However, I cannot get her to send me two filing cabinets."

"So I am looking around for some wargamer who could breeze through the material and pick out anything of interest to the history of wargaming (scenario's, rule modifications, letters to Doc Clerke [Pratt's umpire]. Of course, there may be nothing of any real value."

If anyone might be able to help, I suggest you contact John at john.curry@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks

Peter

Peter, I knew Dan.  He got me started in (metal) 1:1200s.  6 Italian destroyers and 2 heavy cruisers.  I visited himiin his shop when down from Alaska.  His social connection to the Pratts is memorable.  I trust you've seen the article about Fletcher's naval wargames in the Nov42 issue of American magazine.

I am sorry to hear he died.  I hope it wasn't lead poisoning.

As to your request for assistance, I hope someone was able to comply.  I was over here in Norway at the time.

We're all getting up there.  I'm now 71, have beaten off cancer and have had an angiogram after a heart attack last year.  But my 7 yr old daughter and 10 yr old son over here keep me going.  :-)

All the best.
