More game reports for the new year . . .
CSW Expo: Played Plataea (Hoplite) with 5 commanders as a Monster Game for 2.5 days - ended with a hard-fought and *very* close Greek victory (left). Then three of us played Genesis for another 2.5 days (right). Wrapped up Friday with a successful 3-player Warfighter mission, taking out an Insurgent HQ. Another great time as CSW Expo!
As the Seleucus phalanx advances (center), the right wing heavy cav under Antiochus sweep the left wing Antigonid light cav opposing it. The Antigonid army was also plagued by bad momentum and trump die rolls . . .
On the left, the initial line-up for Ipsus 301 BC. Antigonus in blue, Selecus in red. The Macedonian Art of War. On the right, after the initial elephant charges.
Fortress America holds up pretty well for a 30+ year-old game. Cards, cool plastic units, all sorts of bad guys swarming the USA, plays 2, 3 or 4. The picture shows the three bad guy invaders advancing on the heartland.
Macedonian Art of War: Issus. Below, the Persian HC charge across the Pinarus River has failed.
Bottom: Macedonian HC and phalanxes follow with an attack across the river. Where is Alexander? Persian army eventually broke.
Actually, Rain Upon the Sea was USN victory at +38 vp.
My semi-annual gaming weekend in Cedar Rapids with my old gaming buddy (since 1974):
"Phantom Leader" (Co-op) 11 day Rolling Thunder campaign - "adequate" result with 28 VPs.
"Wing Leader": Penny Packets - British win 10 VPs, Cry Havoc - Draw (11 Stukas shot down by the US!), Rain Upon the Sea - Shokaku fatally damaged. big Japanese victory.
Saturday night was a long 3-player Firefly story, carried over to Sunday morning.
Also got "Soldiers" from 1972 on the table Sunday afternoon. Fun time.
Thunderbolt/Apache Leader Israeli Defense "Cut-Off": A Dismal Performance - Pirate's A10 shot down by SAM on Day 1. Destroyed three battalions after three days but not enough to get any more SO points. On Day 4 Viper took an A10 with Display and HUD damage and only dumb bombs (no SO's left). Daddy-O accompanied him in an Apache with the LAU-68 rockets (the not-so-good ones) against an infantry unit. Daddy-O got wounded and took light damage to his AH64. Viper's A10 took hits to Structure, HUD, Engine, Controls & Pylon, plus a bunch of Bullet Holes. At the end of Day 4 I gave it up, with only three badly damaged aircraft and no SO's. Ow!
Just finished reading Warthog: Flying A-10s in the Gulf War. Inspired me to play an Iraq 1991 campaign (Surge) in Thunderbolt/Apache Leader. Received a 17 VP "Good" result. Below, Rock and Freak leave a wake of destruction through an Iraqi command unit. .
