Confession time: I've never had a blog.

I've had my own website for over ten years, but I've never blogged. In fact, I didn't realize until a few months ago that CSW had member blogs. I'm really that blog-unaware. In general, I think this come from not having much to say to the world at large. But I have found over the last few years that I actually have quite a bit to say to the wargaming community.

The question is, who is gonna read my rantings? Who is gonna care?

I have opinions (always evolving, by the way) on subjects such as wargame graphics, wargame design, IPR law, and the general state of the hobby. But of these, the only ones I consider blog-worthy are the subjects of wargame graphics and design. Not that the others don't merit discussion, to the contrary, the debate on those are important. It's just that I have limited energy for blathering on about them myself.

But when it comes to wargame graphics and design (especially the graphics), I seem to have limitless energy for gab. My most recent contribution to this domain has been in the form of a new page on my website, the Playtest Templates page. There you will find Adobe Illustrator templates, replete with symbols and graphics, for use in whipping up decent looking playtest counter and map sheets.

If this blog actually acquires interest from others, particularly with regard to my thoughs, ideas, and methods for wargame graphics, then I may do what guys like Brien Miller have done and blog about it in more detail. If not, well, this may be both my first and last blog post. :-)

John, it's great having you on board and I really appreciate the work you've done regarding playtesting and your own graphic design efforts. I look forward to your future blog posts!

John,

Keep the blog going please. Your play-test thing is great, thank you. I guess I am going to have purchase that graphics tool and figure this out, the only way I have ever made any counters is when I did so via Cyberboard in my game boxes for Eastern Europa (Fire in the East/Scorched Earth/Urals), War in the East 1st Edition, The Next War, War in Europe and various others. I have several DTP games and would love to make new counters for any missing counters from existing games or rework counters for games like you have done, of course this all dreaming cause I never have used AI at all. But please post on.

I checked out your site and unfortunately I do not have Adobe Illustrator - I still use Photoshop 6.1!

I am not a graphics person by trade - I've had to learn as I go. And I am always learning.

What I end up making works for playtesting. Getting to print is another ballgame.

I think the fighter counters for B-29 went through at least five versions before we selected the format we will use in the game.
