I got in a few games of chess tonight at our club here in Chandler. I ended up 1-3, but I was playing people who on the low end were rated about 350 (1765 vs 1416) points higher than me. I almost won a second game, where I was up an exchange and had a good time advantage on the clock, but then blew it by hanging a knight. Oh, well.
So do people here think chess qualifies as a wargame? It obviously is an abstraction of ancient warfare. Growing up I never really played the game. I knew how the pieces moved, but I was interested in 'real' wargames like those from AH, West End Games, GDW and others. I wish I would have given it a chance as a kid, because I have loved it immensely since I started playing a little over a year ago. Growing up though I thought why would I want to play that when I can command the Allies in WWII or whatever forces were in the games I had. Now I play at least one night a week ftf, which is more than I get normal wargames in.
