I got in a few games of chess tonight at our club here in Chandler. I ended up 1-3, but I was playing people who on the low end were rated about 350 (1765 vs 1416) points higher than me. I almost won a second game, where I was up an exchange and had a good time advantage on the clock, but then blew it by hanging a knight. Oh, well.

So do people here think chess qualifies as a wargame? It obviously is an abstraction of ancient warfare. Growing up I never really played the game. I knew how the pieces moved, but I was interested in 'real' wargames like those from AH, West End Games, GDW and others. I wish I would have given it a chance as a kid, because I have loved it immensely since I started playing a little over a year ago. Growing up though I thought why would I want to play that when I can command the Allies in WWII or whatever forces were in the games I had. Now I play at least one night a week ftf, which is more than I get normal wargames in.

I agree that chess is not a wargame by today's understanding of the term. Probably closer to abstract mathematical games. But playing chess is closer to war than playing any wargame.

My father was big into Chess -- now his game is Cribbage. I never took any formal classes or read any books on Chess, and not being a natural at the game, my play would be rated as so-so at best. What I actually really enjoyed was Ty Bomba's Boom and Zoom, or whatever it is called now. Played it years ago and it was quite addicting.
