Just got back from the GMT West Weekend held in Hanford, CA (April 24 - 27). This is my second GMT Weekend and this time was as good as the last time (Spring 2007). I have to say that the GMT experience is the best convention experience I have had. I really like the informal atmosphere and the fact that everyone there is a wargamer. More than wargames get played during a GMT Weekend, but everyone attending is a wargamer.
I played the new version of Blackbeard, Manoeuvre and Kaiser's Pirates, to name a few. Manoeuvre was being played a lot over the weekend and everyone seemed to have good things to say about the game. I got a chance to play most of the armies over the weekend and I'd say the most one-sided affair was a match up between the Ottomen's and the Americans. The Ottomen's have all the advantages and the Americans are nothing more than a "speed bump".
Lots of other games being played over the weekend. Combat Commander, of course. Twilight Struggle, Here I Stand, Pax Romana, Napoleonic Wars. The Russian Campaign, Various Great Battles of History, World at War: Eisenbach Gap and Corps Commander Totensonntag. As always, Mike Lam was there running a non-stop Down in Flames table keeping on-going stats and handing out t-shirts to newly minted aces.
I had a really good time and certainly plan to attend the next GMT Weekend in the fall. I'm not waiting year again this time!
