Just yesterday, one of my PBEM games of A Victory Lost came to an end. As the Axis, I conceded with about 2 turns left. Several of my most powerful units were out of supply and out of command, and two of my most important HQs had been bounced so that quite a few crucial units were out of command. This is only my second completed game, so I'm not surprised that I lost--I made more than my share of mistakes.
Some thoughts:
--The Vassal mod for AVL is so good that it makes its very minor problems all the more glaring. My biggest pet peeve: when you put the cursor over a single unit, it shows a close up of the unit and the hex it's in. But it doesn't work for unoccupied hexes, or for hexes with more than one unit. Weird, but annoying.
--I really like this game. The random chit draw adds a lot to the game because you never know what order things will happen in. You have to think carefully and plan so that you can avoid getting crushed if several consecutive chit draws go against you.
--I need to be a lot more careful with my HQs in the future. One of the key things in the game is that you have to move HQ units so that they'll be in a good position for their next activation. I didn't do this anywhere near as well as I should have. I also got careless with some HQs so they got easily relocated.
