My collection of Inkscape extensions for boardgame (read: wargame) design has now expanded from one effect (the Countersheet Generator mentioned in my two previous blog posts) to two effects. The new one is a Hexmap Generator. It generates a hex grid (with each hexside as a separate line), background polygons for each hex, center dots, and hex coordinates (configurable), all in different layers.

(Tip of the day: Setting the two last checkboxes (half hexes and shift grid to the side), will create a hexgrid that can tile, ie for geomorphic maps.)

By having positive or negative hex coordinate % you get the text at the top or bottom (I don't remember which one is in which direction).

Grid coords can be turned off by deleting or hiding the created layer with the coordinates. I did not find it very useful to have special checkboxes to turn on and off each layer.

Note that after the grid is created, by switching to the coordinate layer and selecting all (ctrl-A, I think, or its in the Edit menu), then all coordinates can easily be moved manually into the exact correct location, or the style/color/font of all the coordinates can be changed until it looks good. The offset value and font size in the dialog is only to get a good starting point before tweaking it. (The same thing can be said about the other layers, to change the color or thickness of the grid etc.)

2 questions ....

Is it possible to put the grid coords at the top of the hex with your settings?

Is there anyway to shut the grid coords off?
